First of all, I completely agree about not cheering for the Oilers.
To the bold though, it is not as certain as you suggest. If the Oilers win tonight, they would be 1 point back. And they play the Nucks twice - not at all a stretch to suggest they get 2 or 3 points out of that.
Meanwhile, the Flames play LA, VAN and the Wild. Probably looking at 2 points.
If the Oilers finish with 3 wins (I. know), they probably finish ahead of us.
Okay so for this to happen:
1. Flames lose to Oilers tonight (odds already against them)
2. Oilers Beat the Canucks at least once (possible, sure)
3. Flames lose to L.A (likely)
4. Flames hopefully lose to Van (same team who lost to the oilers??)
5. Flames lose to MIN team that will be resting it's top players (I guess we can play Backstrom against his former team?)
Think I'll just cheer for the Flames to beat the Oilers and Canucks.
If the Flames win tonight, Oilers are finishing below us. That is the statistical certainty I was talking about.

I hope it's an absolute drubbing. Monahan gets his first career hat trick, Johnny with a couple, Bennett with a great game, and Hamilton with a couple points.
Then we can sit back and enjoy all the stories over the summer how the Oilers are "trending upwards" just in time for the new arena.
Go Flames.
Great write up Cali.

If there's one game I'd like to see the Flames win, it's the game tonight. I despise the Oilers.
The perfect scenario would be for the Oilers to finish dead last, but pick fourth. Sweet, sweet justice.
I was reading the comedy that is Oilers hfboards and apparently the reason for failure this season is all of the injuries they've had, specifically the McDavid one (which is comical as their record is worse with McDavid in the lineup).
They also blame the refereeing this season and feel it's been incredibly biased against their precious greasers. Hysterical!

How could anyone not be cheering for a Flames win at the final Battle of Alberta at Rexall/Skyreach/Northlands?
So much history there, it'd be fitting for the Oilers to win - unfortunately - but wouldn't it be nice for the Flames to crush the Oilers 9-1 one final time in Edmonton?

My favorite bit is that Fleury is top 5 on the list for all time points and penalty minutes.
Agree that this is a good read, but it was buried on page 2 - a sad demonstration of the decline of the Herald's sports section toward becoming a subsidiary of the Edmonton newspaper. The front page article was a celebration of Pat Hughes' 5 goal game in Rectal, as a Gretzky-less Oiler team thumped the Calgary Flames.
I'm embarrassed for anyone who's cheering for an Oilers win.
how do you characterize a Flames win tonight? Does the scenario change if you're thinking long term vs short term?
Is a Flames win:
a) on the scoreboard tonight, placing a decisive victory in their last game at the dastardly Northlands Collesium/Rexall Place?
or
b) putting the Oilers closer to leapfrogging the Flames in the standings, increasing the Flames chances of a top 3 pick and at the same time decreasing the Oilers chances of a top 3 pick?

I think you start Hiller the rest of the year. Then when we hopefully get Matthews and that 6'3 220 lbs beauty is putting up 80+ points a year in 3-4 years, we have a Forever a Flame night for Jonas to show our appreciation. That would be ideal.
With the standings the way they are now, I simulated the lottery and got us picking 1st, Buffalo 2nd and Columbus 3rd. So, anything can happen! I'm cheering for a beat-down to keep the Oilers where they belong, dead last.
Cheering for the Flames to win has had no real impact on the ice for 30 years. It doesn't matter what I do.
I don't think anyone is going to debate you, except for live games perhaps. It's got to be demoralizing to hear a team actively cheering for the away team (Buffalo last season), or throwing a home Jersey on the ice (edmonton indefinitely).
At the end of the day this is a fan forum for the Calgary Flames. Fans are fans because they support and cheer for their team. At this point it's unlikely we get more than a 2% boost in our chances to get 1OA. Also, not tanking has gotten us some damn good players so far.
I'll consider a loss tonight the silver lining, but it's not my first choice by any means. Win-Win scenarios are nice.
