NHLPA to File Lawsuit against NHL on Behalf of Wideman for Defamation & Damages
Quote:
In an exclusive interview, NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr commented on the injustice Calgary Flames defenseman Dennis Wideman faced during his suspension and prolonged appeal process. Specifically, Fehr referenced the comments made by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman following the findings in his review.
Quote:
"The reality is that the NHL has painted itself into a corner with this entire process," Fehr said. "The League has made it very clear that the onus for protection, physically or otherwise, is only afforded to what they consider as employees. Ostensibly, players do not deserve this same kind of respect."
Quote:
Fehr's main point of contention was the treatment of Wideman by Bettman to the media during his report. "The arbiter's ruling demonstrates that the League's accusations of Dennis' character is conjecture at best, and more likely an instance of calculating defamation to support their weak stance."
When challenged on the implications of his accusation and, Fehr insisted that legal action could and would be taken in the coming weeks.
"Absolutely," Fehr insisted, "Dennis is fully within his right to combat these false allegations. The League and the Officials' Union has made him out to be some kind of sociopathic ref-hunting monster. The Association is currently exploring all options regarding significant financial reparations on behalf of Mr. Wideman."
Wideman has missed the last number of games due to an undisclosed injury. However, Fehr made a stunning revelation as to the true nature of this "injury".
"Dennis has suffered measurable psychological damage from his ordeal, and has conferred with his agent to sit out the remaining schedule as he awaits the Flames organization's ability to process his request to be traded to the more desirable markets of Vancouver or Edmonton. This request has indicated to the Association that Dennis' mental faculties have been severely and negatively impacted by the League's handling of his case."
Fehr confirms that Wideman's mental state will be central to any potential lawsuit.
The Flames posted this video of a mom telling her son that Gaudreau asked for a trade.
So mean! I would have cried too.

Hey guys... long time Flames fan and lurker on this forum. I knew someone would post this in here.
THAT'S MY SON LOL!!
My wife tweeted the video to Johnny and he replied pretty quickly, as you can see! My wife replied to Johnny and mentioned we were going to be at the game tomorrow night. The Flames twitter account got in contact with my wife and they're hooking him up with some Flames/Gaudreau swag before the game tomorrow!
And don't worry, he's fine now lol!
