Never liked Campbell from the get go in his position with the league. Always seemed like an arrogant slimeball. These e-mails aren't helping change my mind.

Campbell is an interesting cat because he's got that old school mentality but also has concern for his son.

I irrationally keep thinking that they should be objective reporters who do not try to leverage their positions to generate controversy and 'create the news'... but then this is a game, and they are not the 'journalists of hockey', they are just another type of player.

It is very bizarre to see these emails.

Also, yes, it does seem to humanize them, but it also sheds light on an old boys club mentality that should probably be dealt with. If the former VP of player safety is calling a victim of a hit from behind a 'woos (wuss?) and soft' and essentially pinning the blame on him, how would an independent arbitrator view the league's sincerity in dealing with hits from behind? Kostpolous should be off the hook for not letting up because a player 'put himself in a bad position'?

^That is a great example of how hard this debate must be inside the NHL. Easy for us to have very hard and black and white positions (I'm an anti-fighiting guy) but these guys are facing pressure from all angles. Not easy.

Funny hearing some of the criticism of Aaron "Hospital" Ward.

Bob McKenzie: I didn't mind Ward getting punched. He's a little too smug. That'll teach him to be a smartass.

"Our Bright Future"....as they headed towards the 04/05 Lockout. Mostly stats about the 03/04 season, but interesting.

Welcome to the real world. This is how even politics works.

The media is in the back pockets of who ever has power. If they dare really qurstion the powers to be they lose access to this type of source which means they in turn have no job.

Nothing really surprising here to see just your average behind the scene dealings.

To me, a lot of the interesting links are internal presentations that reflect the current state of thinking, earlier ones being analysis of history of fighting and contributing factors

Some other context, one of the more recent documents.

https://www.documentcloud.org/docume...HL2222223.html

That is a 2013 report on concussion management.

As salacious as some of the emails are, this is likely an example of the context to which Bettman refers. A lot has been done and they take concussions seriously.

Yeah I know. I've never had a real job before, so if this is how people normally communicate internally, then I would be surprised at that as well.

These are unbelievable! Just ran through the first 5 (of 25) pages worth.

Highlights (/lowlights):
  • Burke threatening to break replay rules (in ANA) unless Minny was punished for doing the same.
  • Bettman constantly asking his secretary to print out documents for him
  • Mike Murphy's............terrible...inability.......to write coherently.
  • Campbell's internal struggle; maybe it's time to get rid of fighting!
  • McKenzie's F-bombs
  • Bettman telling his Execs that Terry Gregson's opinion on how fights were managed is "weak" -- instead of disagreeing with him personally (back-stabby).

Liked this quote at the end of a lengthy response from Campbell (document here):

Quote:
One last thing...again out of
respect for the media/journalists you have included on your e-mail, please guys this is a confidential response to all of you and not to be repeated in your columns or on talk shows. If you want to discuss it one on one I am always
available. Even to you Larry despite all the "nice things" you have said about me this year. Thank You.
Brooks just isn't well liked.

The IT guy should be fired for allowing these emails to be leaked. The real story in all of this is how private emails like this were leaked in the first place.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure these were released as part of legal proceedings and once they hit public record they become...well public.

I'm pretty sure this isn't like the Sony hack from a while back.

The e-mails reveal no obvious bad acts or bad actors. Taken in sum, they show the game’s caretakers doing in private what everyone else has been doing publicly – looking for answers.

First of all, these are unsealed documents, as in the legal system made them available.

Second, I can assure you that 99% of email 'leaks', are not caused by the 'IT guy'.
