If I won the $40 Million I would: - Pay off all of my wife and myself's debts
- Pay off my parents' house and debts
- Pay off my in-laws' house and debts
- Send my parents and in-laws on cruise around the world
- Sign a lifetime lease on a lower bowl luxury box at the Saddledome
- Buy property on the edge of the city and commence building a walled estated complete with a dual gated entry lock system. The estate would include a state of the art NHL sized ice rink with all the trimmings including a Zamboni so I could play whenever I wanted and so my team could practice for free any time. There would be a complete spa and pool set-up so we could relax before settling in for a night of Hockey Night In Canada in the Mega Theatre.

- Hire a Financial Advisor who would promptly tell me what an idiot I was for building my estate.
- Hire an accountant to keep me from becoming poor or in debt
- Hire a personal assistant to take care of all the little details I can't stand to deal with and to keep the estate stocked with all my shopping needs.
- Hire a personal trainer to help me from becoming too complacent.
- Hire a driver that would be ready on a moment's notice to take me around town.
- Buy a couple cars and trucks for the wife and I
- Never have a listed telephone number again.
- Invest in some safe funds that would not allow me to withdraw the investment before maturation dates to structure guaranteed payouts for the rest of my life.

I'm surprised we've gotten this far in the thread and only Barnes has given this answer:
"I'd do two chicks at the same time."

$40 Mill.. WOW
$10 I'd spend right away.. pay off my parents house, family debt, college funds for my cousins. Couple cool cars and the rest on real estate
Another $10 on Low risk bonds and GIC etc. (if i blow the rest i can live off the interest comfortably)
Another $ 10 on riskier investments hope for higher returns.. do my research and take my time with this one
$5 .. Charities and such
last $5 would be split between my parents/brother/grandparents to trips and stuff to make them happy they deserve it

Yeah, I noticed after I made my post...I did a search for "two chicks" and it found zero results, so I figured nobody made that joke. Too bad Barnes typed it as "2 chicks".

1) Pay off parents house
2) Sell parents house, send them on a cruise around the world
3) Buy parents a new house, my mom a mercedes, and my dad a jag.
4) Buy my brother house in greece, and car that he wants.
5) Invest about 1/4 of what is left
6) Donate about 1/4 to charities
7) Buy a house in Miami, buy a few cars, chace all the hot miami woman for a year or 10
8) Start a company of some sort. Probably game development.
Think thats it.

My list would look very similar to yours. Even the car selections and game developement might fall on my list.
However, I don't think my bro would like it if I shipped him off to Greece. B-)

I would pay off parent's and sister's house, but not tell them. Go into the bank, ask to make a payment on their mortgage, and pay the whole thing off; including penalties. My sister will call my mom, saying "the bank didn't take out the mortgage payment." My mom will say "funny, mine didn't come out either."
A friend of a friend won 2 Million once. She put the cheque right into her chequing account; she was just waiting to figure out what to do with the money. Within a couple of days the bank manager caller her up to set an appointment to figure out the plan.
Last I heard she was clearing $5000 per month, with the pricipal going up with inflation.
