My family recently adopted a dog that has been a neighbors for years. We've known him since he was a brand new puppy, and now that he is ours I know that his time will come. He is 7 or 8 now, and I absolutely dread losing him one day.

All this talk reminds me of the movie My Dog Skip...absolutely the most heartbreaking and sad movie I have ever seen.

I wish you all the best, as I'm sure it's going to be tough saying good-bye to your friend. Take comfort in the fact that he is no longer suffering, and that you are doing the right thing. I am sure it is hard as hell, but you will pull through stronger because of it.

I feel for you, buddy. Look on the positives; all the good times.

And as hard as it is for you to do, take comfort in being able to say goodbye. I lost my pet rabbit a few years ago; he died quite suddenly. I didn't get to say goodbye.

One thing I found that really helped me with closure, was getting him cremated. There is only one Pet Cremation service in the yellow pages. It was the same as any other meber of the family; there was a little pet funeral home, and myself and a couple of friends had our own little service for him before we put him into the cremation chamber. I got to pick out an urn for him. The person we dealt with was extremely professional.

It cost about $100 5 years ago, and my little buddy was worth it.

On a happier note, I just got a new rabbit a couple of months ago. This new one is nothing like my old one; she's taken up a different place in my heart. Isn't it funny how these little creatures can just sneak into your life like that?

Just put him on his bed, with the blanket we first wrapped him in the day we got him about 13 years ago. Tommorow's the day, and the family had their moments with him and we're ready to let him go, Just by looking at his eyes you can tell that he knows.

We're not doing anything special in terms of a burial, cremation simply because we don't feel that keeps his spirit alive and well, once that shot is in his system and his eyes close for good. He's back at home with us in spirit, saying "Meow" to our other 2 cats that have gone in the past.

What's important to me is that on his last full day, he had his favorite kind of treat, and got to sit out on the deck in the sun with me for alot of the day and breathe alot of fresh air.

Thanks again for all the comments, you don't know how much it meant to me, it's been a rough few days and it's going to be tough for a little while but we're happy he doesn't have to suffer anymore.

I'm sorry you had to say good-bye to your buddy, but you are right in everything you have said. Good luck man.
