Other teams were interested. I don't remember them making offers though. One team at least backed off because of the KHL games played.

Well, the thing is usually the assistant GM will handle things like this so it truly began and continues to be a Bash Weisbrod Thread.

While we're at it, how about that horrible Tracy McGrady trade??

Do backroom deals really happen at this level? The only time I can ever remember something like this happening is in the CFL when the Eskimos got Troy Davis from Hamilton and Jason Maas somehow ended up a TiCat after the Grey Cup.

If it was a back room deal, I don't think they would have structured the contract where O'Reilly needed to be qualified at $6+.

As another point of interest, could the Flames have simply not assigned O'Reilly to the active roster?

Whats with the Weisbrod hate? The guy has been a scout since the 90's

I know he traded away Tracy Mcgrady but as far as hockey goes what has he done to earn such a negative reputation?

His work prior to the Flames hiring looks okay. Was it because he targeted Hankowski and Agostino in the Iginla trade? Jankowski?

Huh?

You know the player has to sign the offer sheet right?

So why wouldn't the Avs just offer the contract in the 1st place?

I think what bothers people the most was after Burke had finished his organizational review and relieved Feaster & Weisbrod of their duties, Burke said he didn't know what Weisbrod did and that he was never around. Not the thing you want to hear about the "hockey guy" that Jay Feaster was supposedly consulting on all hockey related moves.

The league would have stepped in before that. It would have been a PR nightmare if it ended with him being claimed on waivers. Thats negative press the NHL wouldnt have wanted. For all we know that did happen behind closed doors.

I was glad to see Feaster & Weisbrod gone as well as King who I heard was involved with the ROR offer sheet. They thought they were the smartest guys in the room and fed us a line like we knew nothing. Calling them amateur hour is being kind and this latest contract gaft with Weisbrod is just another example.

I remember it was a bit ambiguous as to whether or not O'Reilly would have ended up going through waivers. Daly's off-the-cuff remarks were indeed that he would have required waivers, but a follow-up question at a later date resulted in him saying something like they would have to look at it more closely.

Regardless, it would have been a complete disaster. Would have prolonged a much-needed rebuild by at least another year or two, and we would have been paying him huge money rather than what Monahan is making now (and I bet Monahan's contract will still look better than O'Reilly's after he re-signs).

I don't know about you guys, but I would rather keep Monahan over ROR even in a world where you don't look at contracts. Sure, ROR is a really good 2-way center, but he has never scored 30 goals or more in a season. On a rebuilding team where you have to accumulate top-end talent, ROR is a downgrade. It was the wrong move regardless of the waiver issues (which I think would have been fine given Daly's other remarks and an ambiguous MOU at the time). It just would have made a horrible move into something truly ghastly if ROR indeed was put on waivers.
