That's pretty close to a kicking motion. This could go either way.

Wasn't part of the rule that the kicking motion had to propel the puck into the net? So a deflection that just changed the angle would always be OK? Or am I just making that up?

They changed it to that you can put your skate in a position to redirect the puck in bit you can't kick it soccer style in IIRC

I thought the spirit of the rule was a distinct kicking motion into the net i.e towards the goal. Stajan was actually kicking away from the net to try and control it.
