The same reason why you were traded; to avoid losing him without compensation. That is why the Flames won't offer him a deal that expires when he reaches UFA status. He will either get a three to four year deal or a longer one that goes well into his UFA years.

Johnny is a first class athlete and person who may come once every ten years to a franchise. He's like an Iginla or Kiprusoff. The Flames are so lucky to have drafted him and kudos to Feaster and Co. for taking the risk.
Lock this kid up for the long-term. He will be driving the offence and PP for many, many years to come.

Anyways, BCHJ was in here not too long ago insisting that there was no chance Johnny would sign anything but a 5 year deal that would take him to his first available UFA opportunity.
Plus there always seems to be a bit of hand wringing/pessimism over it, which is understandable I guess given he is from out east and seems to be real close with his family.
Anyways, glad to hear that he is planning on being here a long time, but I won't feel super great about it until he's signed a long term deal, hopefully 8 years.

I could see him signing a deal that takes him to his last year of RFA status for roughly $7-8 million per year. That way he has a chance to cash in on his next deal for 7-8 years at $10 million + per year.
Of course he'd be taking the risk of that next contract never coming for whatever reason.

My guess is he signs a 7-year, $45.5 million contract.

BCHockeyJunkie did make that post but that doesn't mean they're entirely in the know about the situation and the reality of RFAs. 5 years is a non-starter as Conroy said on the radio. Something like, "If Grossman (agent) comes to us with 5 years, don't even bother"

You guys have to remember these athletes retire 32-40 years of age. Which is extremely young to retire. I'm sure players don't mind playing in cities other than their hometown, than retiring young at home. Heck there is also American alumni that live in the city.
Helps we live in a beautiful city as well.
Johnny isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

"Rest of the board"? No, it was just a few, very vocal, people that panicked.

I don't think there's any doubt anymore Johnny is a star in the NHL and will continue to be one for years. He could realistically make his living anywhere given how good he is.
That said, I think Johnny is very grateful to the Flames for drafting him when he doubted he'd even play in the NHL, and I think he feels a little bit of loyalty. I base this on nothing other than the fact that he and his parents just seems like great, down to earth people.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Almost sounds like Johnny met a girl in Calgary and he's ready to put down roots.
Our little Johnny's growing up. *sniff*

Gaudreau seems like a pretty grounded guy.
It's kind of funny to me that some people assume that because someone is from an American megacity, that they might not see the positives of being in a smaller Western Canadian market. I know a lot of people who moved from large urban areas to live in smaller cities.
Plus, like he mentions, he has every summer to go where ever his heart desires.

This.
I think athletes who don't max their earning potential are short sighted and cocky. One dumb play by anyone on the ice and your career is over and all that earning potential goes with it.

Many athletes take less than their max earning potential as a UFA so that they can put down roots with their families as opposed to moving around North America all the time. I don't think that's cocky, in fact quite the opposite.
