Sens are an absolute mess.

Sure him being a healthy scratch may be stupid coaching- but that usage chart also points to pretty good usage when he is in the lineup. 2nd line minutes, and always playing with high quality linemates when he is in the lineup.

Zibanejad, Ryan, Turris, and Stone are a pretty good list of players to have as your top 4 linemates.

Don't watch the Sens enough to know who is driving the lines effectiveness though - would be interesting to see their WOWY.

He plays LW, so positionally at least, whether he is a guy the Flames would target would depend on their draft. IMO that is when Hoffman would be traded.

Don't know if he can play right but he definitely shoots left. If the Flames draft a Centre or LW, and Hoffman cannot play RW, he may be a luxury more than a need.
You always want guys who can score, but unless the Flames move out salary to be able to offer him a multi-year deal this year, you do not make the move to acquire him.
The cost would also be high, as again, goalscorers can be hard to find. But in a salary cap world, you don't give a high pick for a guy ready to cash in when you are still working your way up to contention. You go with a cost-controlled asset, or you unbalance your roster.

I don't think this is the time for the Flames to make a move like this - wait until bad contracts off the books and the team is more ready to compete. Unless of course Hoffman comes cheaper than he should AND you can move out salary. But the odds of both of those things happening seem slim to me.

To me, this seems like a deal the Ducks could be all over - move out an RFA defenceman to add a weapon up front, someone who could play next to Getzlaf or be a scorer on a second unit. Add the family connection in management too.

They kind of just did that at the deadline adding Pirri, perhaps a poor man's Hoffman. They also are transitioning Nick Ritchie, top 10 pick into their top 3 lines and he'll likely end up in their top two lines next year if he makes the club full time.

I wonder if a Hoffman for Drouin scenario was what the big hooha was about before the trade deadline.

No reason for the Sens to take bad money in this trade...they'd be better off paying him.

What would an arbitration number look like for him? He's 17th in the league in goals right now. Can't think of many comparables (at least certainly not bursting onto the scene at 25). 4.5-5.5? What's a long term deal? Not much incentive for Hoffman to sign when he can hit UFA in a year.

Drouin? But it wouldn't matter when it happened for it to make sense.

Interesting guy to watch. I can't think of too many late bloomers who were able to sustain these production levels for more than 2-3 years. Alex Burrows had 4 years of good production at a similar age with a bit more NHL experience before breaking out.

Rene Bourque had 3 good productive years in Calgary as a late bloomer at a similar age than fizzled out.

Ottawa might be wise to take another one year deal and let him walk. Odds might be suggesting that he only has 1-2 more years of this kind of goal production.

From the small amount of clips i've seen of him, he takes faceoff's on the LW so that's where the ottawa coaching staff probably wants him in the Dzone.
With that being said, if you look at his goal video reel, the majority of his goals are him on the right side of the ice or from the middle slot (which makes sense because he's a shooter). I don't believe there would be a big adjustment for him on the RW.

Goal scoring is at a premium, and having a guy who can shoot the way he does is gonna cost you. He's not old (26), skates decently well and has an insane shot. Granted I don't watch a lot of ottawa, but I don't see a huge risk in giving him a contract in the 5yrx5mm range. I would love him on the flames

Ive watched around 20 Sens games this year and I get why the Sens are reluctant to go long term with him. He seems to really disappear against the better teams or as the checking gets tighter, where as Stone seems to find a way in the clutch.
