Weird, I'd have thought they'd at least use him in the AHL.

Then teams should be allowed to buy out injured players.
I agree with that but this is a sleazy way to get around the rule. Why should Cowen be punished because the Leafs acquired him? We demonize Drouin for not playing while under contract but it's perfectly fine for the Leafs to pull this crap? Okay then.

Drouin refused to report to the AHL and demanded a trade...entirely different circumstances.

Oh sure. But the PA wants to protect injured players, this is the consequence.
Well, as a previous poster mentioned this is all part of a process. The team tells a player to go home, the PA screams their heads off, the League then allows the team to buy that player out so he can find another contract and everyone is happy.

I understand the Leafs position here if they don't see any way for him to help them this year or moving forward. If he was to get injured it would cost them a chance to buy him out.
It's a business and this is nothing but a business decision, albeit an odd one for sure.

I hear what you're saying but I think not playing for the last 20 games will hurt his ability to get a contract for next year. It seems like such a cold move for a team that doesn't even need the cap space for next year.

Yup, that is weak. I would think Cowen is looking at a one year show-me contract now. Perhaps he isn't worth much more than that, but I might take a shot at him as a reclamation project.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

agree especially as the Toronto Tankersons don't even want to win. send him to the marlies or loan him some place to play.
for one of the richest teams out there, it sure sucks.

Yeah, it's hard to sell your services when the people you're selling to can't see the product.
On July 1st, the thing that is going to be fresh on everyone's mind is that Cowen is the guy that was told to go home and not play. It hardly puts him in a good position.
