Same as Hudler - kinda surprising but Stempniak is having a good year and leads his team in scoring.
Feel like Boston got desperate to do something since their name was involved with so many deals.

Solid return, it is too bad he wasn't playing like this on the Flames

strange... perhaps BT bit too early on the Hudler deal... of well, good deadline all around for the Flames, though.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
BOS sends 2016 4th rounder and 2017 2nd rounder to NJ for Stempniak.

I like our return for Hudler better. Rather have the 2nd rounder immediately than next year.

He hasn't had a whole lot of experience, but I think Stempniak's game might be more suited for the playoffs than Hudler. Overall, I think they are equal value wise based on their season this year.
Other thing is, I think Treliving moved Hudler earlier so he could focus on the Russell deal. There were only two defensemen available but lots of forwards. It looks like it all worked out.

Stempniak can't seem to stick anywhere despite putting up points and effort pretty much anywhere he has been. Real strange.

I think Treliving did fine on the Hudler deal, but Sweeney just gave up 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th round picks on 2 average players.
Add the Hamilton trade, off the board drafting, accidental press releases, and I think you got a bad GM. He could improve though.

Yeah but NJ could easily miss the playoffs next year.
This is a better return than what Hudler got. Sure Stempniak is cheaper but there's always that salary retention thing.
Gotta be happy for the guy, he is in demand every year.

Maybe ol' Stemper will finally win a cup, with this, his 9th NHL team.
Most likely he will not.

Arguably about the same return as Hudler with the different years involved. Can't help but wonder if the Bruins were in on Hudler. If you are giving up this for StempniK wouldnt you do a 2nd and 3rd for Hudler?

After skimming through the NHL stats page, it looks like Stempniak was actually the best player traded on the Trade Deadline.
Stempniak is ranked 72nd in the NHL, with 41 points.
Jiri Hudler and Andrew Ladd were the next best tradees, each tied with 35 points, ranked around 117th.
All the other players involved in trades were ranked lower than them... kind of an underwhelming trade deadline.

Wasn't Stepniak a pro try out guy at camp for New Jersey? They end up getting a great return on that offer. Good for Stepniak, it's not easy to keep fighting for a job at his age, but he has done it well this year. Will be interesting to see if any team I'd willing to give him a termed deal this off season.
