A second and a prospect for a cap dump? Washington must have more irons in the fire.

Wow. Brooks Laich is now the highest paid player on the Leafs active roster.

I thought that as well, but then the Caps needed out of Laich's contract and this was the only way to do it. This is where having cap space and being in a full tear down rebuild can really benefit you. You can take on bad short term contracts that teams don't want. They do win, but then they are clearly projecting to be terrible again next year, so a fair bit of pain still to go for them.
Wonder if they go back in for Bickell's contract with the Hawks.

It's clear as day now that negative trade value is a very real and tangible thing in today's NHL cap world. I guess "zero trade value" isn't the worst a player could hope for.

They now have room for Russell. This maybe explains why he flew to Philly, pretty close to DC.

Feel for @brookslaich in this trade. He has been in DC thru it all and this was his best chance to win. Tough business sometimes.

Cuthbert was OK but Toronto is a better fit for a "Hough"

I'm surprised they were able to squeeze so much out of Winnik and taking Laich. Great trade!

It's too bad the Flames didn't capitalize on free cap space and honourless free agent signings like the Maple Leafs are.
Oh well, 12+ picks might be too much for proper development and future contract numbers anyways

What exactly is honourless about it?

Those poor guys who signed 1 year contacts on a rebuilding team never would've seen this coming

Man, leafs have done really well this deadline. Have been shrewd in buying up picks. Still likely another 2nd coming for parenteau.

Leafs have money to burn so I can't fault them for buying picks.

The Leafs will end up trading Laitch at the trade deadline next year (assuming he's not terrible/hurt) so they'll end up getting another pick out of this as well.

This is the type of trade many of us were hoping the Flames were going to make back at the start of the rebuild when there was tons of cap space.
Instead we ended up with players like Smid, Stajan and Raymond on terrible contracts. who the Flames may have to pay other teams to take now, haha.
Ah well.

I'm sure the GM's would love to do trades like this but the Flames ownership has shown they aren't overly receptive to burning cash. Very few teams would have had ownership backing them on a deal like this.
