It's possible now both civilly and criminally. No need to create new laws about it; just a question of enforcement. I don't think it would be wise to criminally prosecute people for saying nasty things. Hate speech is already a crime in Canada but not often prosecuted for many good reasons.

Death threats are not easy to prosecute. There has to be actual intent for the person receiving the threat to fear for his or her life. I doubt the police or the Crown would feel it was worthwhile to prosecute except in the most extreme circumstances. Similarly, a lot of cost and risk to sue someone; I wouldn't bother unless someone was harassing you long-term and they had some assets that you could actually get a payout at the end of the day.

I probably shouldn't make jokes on an obscure, unrelated internet forum about an event that happened three years ago to a guy no one on here knows about threats that never amounted to anything.

Where I come from, death threats aren't really a laughing matter, no matter how much time has passed.

You must be from 'Murica, where it's everyday comedy.

Toronto is the ####tiest hockey market. Centre of the hockey universe my great aunt's ass. I hope that team gets blacklisted like the Oilers and no one ever wants to play there. The media is a disgrace and so is a large portion of their fans.

People suck.

Its always alarming how many people go as far as threatening someone's life on social media because of pretty irrelevant things. I'm not sure if its actually dangerous or if its just pathetic.
If every person on the internet had to disclose their full name, picture and address on their avatar and profile for every single online account, otherwise they would face fraud charges, crimes like this would not happen.

People act like idiots when hiding behind anonymity

Me thinks Reimer will not be re-signing with the Leafs even if they offer him a contract. No worries for him as Brian Burke will be open arms welcoming him back to Alberta.

So safe to say Reimer likely won't be back in Toronto?

I would have taken a page out of Michael Corleone's playbook and given her the kiss of death.

This is a pretty derogatory way of referring to the United States, especially when inferring that in America, death threats are comedy and happen 100% of the time.

Since you're gonna be all social justice warrior, it goes both ways. Your post is offensive to Americans.

You must be an oversensitive idiot from who the hell cares because it's not relevant. I think stereotyping an entire nation of people is more harmful than polak's joke comment.

So easy to spot out the posters who don't visit anywhere else on the internet and think jokes like that on CP are harmful and in bad taste.

I certainly ####ing hope not. Such laws would be an affront to the constitution and liberal democratic values. If there ever are, I'd be so pissed I'd be tempted to take on the constitutional challenge pro bono. And I bet I'd have to get in line to do so.

The Gregory Allen Elliot saga was an embarrassment to our entire justice system.

I feel like this story would have been perfect to tell via the Players Tribune. I know in this case the wife isn't actually the player, but considering how well those articles are able to voice the personal and often vulnerable sides of athletes, the subject matter I think would have been very powerful.

Maybe in the bigger picture it could have had a little more impact than being more of a random wire story. Perhaps could have even made one or two people think twice about such behavior in the future.

I know it's far far less of an issue, but I feel that even some comments on this board about individual players are way over the top and unnecessary. Especially ones who have family in the area and are more likely to hear about such comments (though I suppose any Flames player's family might easily happen upon this site).

It can't be nice for someone in Colborne or Raymond's family to read "fire him into the sun" or "trade him for a bag of rocks". Hopefully Hiller's family doesn't read English.

300? That's a lot. Can't really say it was just a few "bad apples".

Or she could be exaggerating. Wouldn't be that interesting if it was only 3 or 30.

Either way, Leaf fans don't deserve to celebrate a Stanley Cup win.
