Canucks are interested but Benning doesn't want him for free. He will trade for him.

He's a Kootenay boy, meaning he's obviously going to be a star.
I'm not biased.

I thought there was an NHL rule that any unsigned FA had to sign with the Blackhawks. Isn't that a thing?

Wonder which other teams are interested. Have Gretzky and Coffey been seen around him lately? Good on the kid for working hard to become better. I imagine after being passed over its pretty difficult to keep on trying.

Born and raised in my minor hockey rival town. Growing up I hated Nelson. I love Nelson as an adult. So much culture and character. Plus, it's a great town for hockey.
Man, what I wouldn't do to go back in time and play in some of those Rossland vs Nelson match ups again. So many camping games.

I saw the thread title earlier and thought the name rang a bell. Be cool to see the Flames sign a local boy.

I saw Hunt play a few weeks ago. After a few nice plays I had to check who it was and it was Hunt. We ended up lighting up Medicine Hat 9-3. Hunt had 1g and 3a and was a +4.

I totally agree with the earlier poster that thought Hunt would just be a wasted contract spot. How many of his 50 goals were scored on 16-17 year old defenceman and goalies? The problem with the 20 year old overagers is it is literally men against boys. I would be a lot more excited about an unsigned NCAA free agent who is getting 2 points a game against his peers

I'm glad Sutter didn't have that attitude when Giordano was an overage player in the OHL. He probably ends up being nothing, but all it costs us is a contract spot if that's the case.

This is where scouting pays off. You can't look at an overager's stat sheet - however good it may look - and draw much in the way of a conclusion. If the Flames feel he is worth a contract on, I would trust their judgement. Personally, I can't remember another over-ager that was drawing this much attention - though I am sure there have been some. I am sure there have been many undrafted over-agers with high point totals that only got invites and didn't get signed either.
On a silly side-note, funny how sometimes organizations work. Feaster and Weisbrod seemed to be fixated on the 'owski' players - Jankowski, Hanowski and Bartkowski was one of the players in the Iginla package back then.
This management group - Hunter Smith, Hunter Shinkaruk, and now Dryden Hunt? Any other Hunt-types out there?

I heard they're both trying to sign Huntowski.

Yeah, that'll never happen.
There is only one player in the past two decades to score 2 pts / game in Div I NCAA, and he already plays for the Flames.

Kyle Connor is coming nice and close. Too bad he won't see free agency in a long, long time.

I'm always for signing top prospects that have had great overage seasons.
You simply never know if the guy is legit or is taking advantage of his league due to age. If it is a legit thing, then you've basically added a late 1st round pick equivalent talent to your organization. If not, then he'll be a decent filler guy. Most times it ends up being a Bryan Cameron or Kenney Morrison where they don't find further success, some times it does work out and you can never tell before hand.

Definitely sign him up. He could be another Jooris. An asset acquired for nothing but a contract.

Only if you break down how many of his goals the NCAA free agent (most of which are 22 years or older) scored against 18-19 year old defenceman and goalies.
