They don't. Advertisers demand it. It's a money issue. SN is giving the NHL 5.2 billion for the rights. They need to make that money back. The Sens are not a draw and the Habs lose over half their audience to the French channels.

Sportsnet and TVA Sports and have an alliance, they are not in direct competition. Vancouver is the #1 market west of Toronto, the early start does affect advertising.
