a = (vf^2 - vi^2) / (2*d), where
a = acceleration
vf = final velocity
vi = initial velocity
d = distance
To do some rough math, let's assume your head is travelling at 30 km/h which is 8.3 m/s.
For d=1cm, deceleration will be about 3500 m/s^2 (350 g's)
For d=5cm, deceleration will be about 700 m/s^2 (70 g's)
For d=10cm, deceleration will be about 350 m/s^2 (35 g's)
For d=100cm, deceleration will be about 35 m/s^2 (4 g's)
Now, I don't know what g force causes a concussion but I'm going to assume that 35 g's should do the trick and that's with a 10cm deceleration distance with is wayyyyy more than any helmet provides.
So ya, I can't imagine helmets do squat to prevent concussions.
