I thought the Hart was awarded to the best player that season?
Didn't realise it was career based. Better call up Kane and tell him "Sorry, gotta give it to Crosby or Ovechkin until they retire, don't want to confuse the fans."

The Hart is awarded to the NHL's most valuable player, not the best player.

I wouldn't quite say locked down. Plenty of season left. Benn/Seguin as well.

No. So I'm not sure why there is confusion. Kane is the odds on favorite to win it this season, and as I said, it probably won't be close.
Who would you give it to at this point and why?

Kane. But, if you look at the title of the thread, it's not about JG winning the award.

Actually no, as already stated, it's the best player.
Tell me: who would you value more than the best player in the league?
The 2nd best?
8th best?

Basically the same award, one is voted by the NHLPA and the other by the writers association. That's why quite often the same player will win both awards.

So you agree.
As for the thread and OP, no Johnny should not be a finalist this season. He's close but not quite there.

He's 6th in league scoring. In spite of one of the worst PPs in the league (the worst?).
I personally feel that there's no way he'd win it with Kane and Holtby, but your post is pretty ironic given how ridiculous it is to suggest he wouldn't even be in the conversation. Though if you're trolling, I for sure took the bait so congrats.

Kane is leading the league by a fair margin, Hawks are leading their division.
Holtby is leading the Caps to likely their best regular season ever, leading the East.
Erik Karlsson is averaging more then ppg (Sens likely don't make the playoffs).
Gaudreau even if the Flames make the playoffs wouldn't have done anything exceptional. Guys like Benn, Seguin, Kuznetsov, Ovechkin, Malkin etc will all be around ppg and playoff teams. Would they be in the conversation as well?
This is basically like saying if the Oilers make the playoffs should McDavid get the MVP? Sounds ridiculous, doesn't it?

While your second point is true, they are not "basically the same".

No it really doesn't. If McDavid led the Oilers from their current position into the playoffs he could absolutely be a finalist. Same with Johnny. We're not talking about winning the MVP here, just that they're mentioned/in the conversation.
Anyways the point being that your initial post was overly dramatic and disparaging. It's not a ridiculous idea at all. The fact that one of the most well respected pundits in media said it also proves that. Do you disagree?
Ps Benn and Seguin could easily be in the convo too

See, the Hart rarely goes to players on stacked teams, like the Caps, Stars and Pens. The point is that the teams wouldn't be close to being as successful without the valuable player, so to have teammates nominated for such an award is silly.

Let's pump the brakes on the Johnny mvp talk. It's not happening this year, but next year if him and Monahan consistently do what they did last night, we can revisit this topic.

Johnny an MVP finalist (if the Flames make the playoffs)?

I know you've got a sticking point somewhere in this, but there is an extremely good reason why the winner of the Lindsay/Pearson award has been 1st or 2nd in Hart trophy votes EVERY YEAR for the past 25+ years.
It's because they are basically the same award.
Who is the league's most outstanding player? Always the guy who is the most valuable player, or the next best player who people thought arguably was the MVP.
MVP = Best Player
Different voters, different opinions, that's all.

Yes, that's what they say. But let's face it......both of those awards are for the best player, just voted on by different groups.
edit: Pepsi took the words out of my mouth.
