Hudler for Staal or Hudler for Drouin. Flames would have to take a chance at signing Staal before free agency.

No thanks. Staal's going to get around $6m per year IMO.

I think Hudler looked good in the Dallas game (mind you, Dallas is not exactly stout defensively), so I would give him prime time and hope he can get up to close to a PPG clip for the rest of the month and then say "see? It was all injuries - he is back. Now gives us all your 1st round picks!"

I don't think fans should get too excited about the deadline as there's been a correction in the past few seasons and they could be looking at a 3rd round pick at best for Hudler or Jones and a 2nd round pick for Russell. You aren't going to see many teams flashing around 1st round picks at the deadline like the days of old.

Hudler needs to put a couple more games together. His body was beaten up last playoffs and with all the rest he likley needed, I don't think he got in the shape he usually did coming into the season, which caused more injuries.
If he's over those, he has to prove that now. Otherwise his value will be negligible and then there's question if Burke will trade him, for the same reasons he didn't trade Cammalleri (respect for the player, given the return he'd be getting).

I don't have overly high expectations, but when glen cross gets a 2nd and 3rd, its not impossible to believe that a guy who had 30+ goals last year could get you a 2nd and a good prospect, or a 2 2nds or maybe even a late first. I think its quite possible.
plus we can always eat some of the cap, or take a cap dump back or ship multiple players/propects to land a bigger asset in return. Lots of creative ways to get value here.
Also, I really wish you'd change you avi.

Sad reality is that the Flames don't have a top 6 winger to replace Hudler and there are no guarantees in free agency. I could almost see BT signing Hudler to a cheap 1 year deal as a "show me" kind of thing.

Values have changed year to year at the deadline. If anything Glencross may be a cautionary tale for GMs

If there is one thing we should have learned by now, the trade deadline is unpredictable. The second someone thinks the values are going to be low, they end up being crazy. It will be interesting how it plays out.

The Stamkos and Drouin situations are probably going to screw up the Hudler situation like the Cammy situation got screwed the other year

Yeah, I wouldn't be upset if they signed him to a reasonable 3 year deal. 3yr x 3.5 mill for example. Everyone is complaining about Hudler's play, but his current ppg is pretty close to his norm and this is while he's playing through an injury.
I would hate to see the top two lines next season if they can't find a reasonable replacement for Hudler.

I know it wasn't at the deadline but Bieksa fetched a 2nd 6 months ago and looked absolutely atrocious last year. He is barely a bottom pairing D man lol.
Anything can happen!
Hudler easily gets a 2nd though. Easily.

Unless he has a long-term injury from which he will not recover fully, I keep Hudler. This is still a rebuilding team with a few glaring holes, and he has proven to be a great mentor, not to mention a great contributor when healthy. I don't ditch that for a third round pick. Ideally I would like to sign him for another three years.

If Hudz is willing to take a shorter term at a much lower price, I would keep him. If not, you need to move him for something at the deadline. This team needs a right handed shot #1 right winger. Would like to get an Okposo-type guy if we could

What if the Flames sign Monahan to a 1 year deal to help alleviate and transition off the big money in our bottom 3 D until the next offseaon then sign him up to a long-term deal? Would there be any appetite for that?
I know Mony will probably dislike the idea of a show-me contract, but it could also be a motivation factor for him to continue growing as this year he seems to have stagnated or regressed a little.

The days of old? What about the days of last season, when Nashville gave up a 1st(plus Ollie Jokinen and a prospect) for Cody Franson and Mike Santorelli, both of whom were rentals? Or what about the 1st the Hawks gave up for Vermette?
There are many different ways to acquire a high pick. Maybe we retain some of Hudler's salary to make him open to more teams and as such, we ask for a higher return? Maybe we throw in a mid range pick of our own, such as Hudler and our 3rd for a 1st?(just spitballing btw) Maybe we package Hudler up with another player that probably isn't going to be around long term, someone another team might covet?
But for me, you only have to look at some of the 1st's that got traded for pretty average players last season to show that you can't call how the market is going to look this year. If we'd have had the market there was last season 12 months earlier, we'd have got a 1st for Cammy. Is this year going to be a weak market like it was when we tried to trade him? Who knows? But I simply don't see the pessmism. Why not stay optimistic, especially given how well Brad has done with his trades thus far(well, bar Bollig I suppose). Have some faith.

Last year, from January until the deadline, there were 7 firsts, 12 seconds, and 15 thirds traded. Plus a bunch more lesser picks. I'm pretty sure there will be a lot of picks moved this year as well. 2014 was weird, but that is the only year where rentals were dirt cheap.
