First and foremost, Ferland has been fantastic on the first line. He wasn't just filler. He scored 54g in his last junior year, and remember, power forwards take time to develop. In 2002 Canucks fans were dying to get rid of Bertuzzi. Look what he turned into.
Second, since Ferland arrived in the NHL, how many fights has he engaged in. He is not fighting in the NHL regularly. Sure fighting has dropped, but that's not what Ferland has been looking for.
Third. We know of one Ferland concussion. We (the royal we) all suspected one in the playoffs and it turned out to be another (oblique?) injury. So far it seems like this isn't that.
To me it appears that the Flames want Ferly to be an offensive physical presence capable of playing on lines 1-4, but preferably lines 1-2. If he has to drop the gloves, so be it. It will be his choice.
The most promising thing about Ferland is that he uses his brain a lot more than most power forward developments. More than Bertuzzi, more than Kassian, and even more than Lucic. Ferland has some hockey sense. And good judgement.
