What a world we live in. I remember when people answered their doors and their phones. They also knew their neighbors names and said hello to people on the street. When did we get so cynical?
About the same time the liars, con artists, and other high pressure dbags started preying on nice people and the elderly.

Because 99.9% of the time, when it's someone at my door or calling me that I don't already know, I don't want to talk to them.
In our modern world, where basically every waking moment I'm connected to everyone else either in person, by email, by phone, by social media, it can feel like I get next to no privacy. The last thing on earth I want is to waste my time (even if it's 2 minutes, because those two minutes are becoming increasingly scarce) telling someone I don't want whatever the hell it is they're peddling.
When I came home last Friday, It was the end of my work week, I was tired, and I was looking forward to some down time. Seeing some guy on my stoop waiting to pitch me something is the last thing I want.
How often do you get a phone call from a number you don't know that you actually were GLAD you answered?
Only reason I really go for the door during the day is because I think a package might be there. I HATE going to the depot to pick something up, so I'll risk the pitch man. Unless it's Sunday.
I find that I don't really get a chance to be a total dbag to people like I would like to, so door to door salesmen give me that outlet. They deserve it, I figure.

I don't usually answer or am very short with them but Telus was apparently canvassing to tell me fibre has been installed in McKenzie Towne so I was glad to answer that one. Have not followed up yet but plan to.

I pretty much changed who I was going to vote for in October because of a neighbor that was canvassing my building for her friend. I'm glad I answered the door and always try to when I'm home.
It's called being polite and a good citizen. If I don't want donething, a firm no is all that is needed.
I mean all the power to you, but I really can't understand what is so scary/annoying/difficult about answering the door.
I simply can't be bothered, if you weren't invited and I'm in the middle of something I'm not stopping, knowing full well that there's a 90% chance that whoever came to my door is going to annoy me.
That said I can't remember the last time someone came to my door when I was home, I always seem to be out and miss these guys

For me it's the JW's when they come a knocking to peddle thier religon.

Probably when it used to be just friends and family who knocked on your door. These days its just scammers, sales people. If anyone is coming over they always call me first, so a random knock on the door immediately causes me anxiety since I hate dealing with sales people.

Isn't the better question to ask what possible benefit could their be to answering your door.
My neighbours I'm friends with have my phone number so would text first. The kids my kids play with tend just to be outside most of the time so no knocking required people are there or not. For those advocating door answering what purpose does it serve?

Personally, we live in a townhouse and our door is on the ground level with the garage. All our living space is up at least one flight of stairs. I'm certainly not going down and up a whole flight of stairs just to tell a sales guy to piss off.

All of these are recent examples from my house:
It could be a neighbour trying to be neighbourly. "Hey- I see you are starting your fence and we have some leftover wood. Do you want it?"
I had a neighbour kid ask if I mind if he uses my basketball net at the end of the driveway.
It could be scouts selling popcorn.
It could be a hockey team doing a bottle drive.
With the latter two, when I was a kid trying to fundraise it was often disheartening to be told no, to have doors slammed, etc. I made a promise to my older self to try and help out if I could. I think the value to society for the latter examples out weighs the telling the door to door salesman that I'm not interested.

A whole flight of stairs, oh my!
