I hurt my groin jumping off a house boat last year and then started playing soccer a few weeks later and I think my injury had a similar effect to Hudlers by the sounds of it.

It hurt like a bitch when it happened, but it went away pretty much the next day. My second game of the soccer season the exact same pain came back while I was running but only for a few minutes and it continued to flare up during the entire season, every game and even at work and at home from seemingly random movements. I remember there were times where I would just be sitting in bed watching tv and I would just move my leg slightly or do some movement and it would hurt so much that I couldn't move but a few minutes later it would be gone. This didn't stop until I stopped playing soccer and had a break from sports between summer and ski season where it finally healed up. Haven't felt the pain since.

If Hudlers injury is similar then it makes sense that he was trying to play through it cause it's possible as it only hurts for a few minutes at a time and it would explain his seemingly reserved nature. Obviously, he is a professional athlete and not a semi-athletic stoner who plays sports occasionally and doesn't know a proper warm up from the Maccarina, so his tolerance, severity and recovery is probably a lot different but if he does have something like I did, then taking even a month off from exertion should do wonders.

It really fits the bill though.

The thing about a sports hernia is that you can play through it and not really do more damage. It impacts your play because it hurts like bloody hell especially after the games or getting up in the morning.

A sports hernia is extremely hard to diagnose and if a player wants to try playing through it it's not something that a doctor or trainer would regularly notice. I would hazard a guess that there is at least 20 players at any given time playing with a sports hernia in the NHL.

That explains why when I saw him this summer at the Rogers cup (Tennis) in MTL playing ball hockey against ATP players, he played mostly on defence....Either that or he didn't trust Alex Burrows «defensive» game....

No seriously, i had a chance to speak with him and congratulate him for his great season. He seemed real fit and has a great sense of humour..When i asked him who was babysitting Johnny while he was playing, he responded... « His parents! It's summer time...I only get him in the winter!!!»

Makes sense. As expected, some sort of chronic injury. Glad to know his hockey skills didn't just fall off a cliff for no reason.

Among one of my current ailments, I have an Inguinal Hernia. Only hurts when I do a scissor action with resistance or standing with full body load from kneeling. Painful as a b!$@#...

Very intermittent though. Infact, when I play hockey I rarely feel it.

Only recovery option is surgery. For me anyway. But as I understand it. Surgery is always necessary. 6-8 week recovery.
