Raymond was a safe waiver player, because (as it turned out), no team would be stupid enough to pick up the bloated contract. Byron, on the other hand, had an easy contract to take a chance on. If they didn't want to lose to lose him, they could have put someone else with an overgenerous contract on waivers, like Engelland.

Was this year not the third time the Flames had waived Byron before he got claimed? I figured he would clear but he didn't oh well not a huge loss.

If Engelland had been claimed, that would have left the team with only five healthy defencemen. Then they would have had to call someone up, and had the same problem to deal with all over again. In the circumstances, they pretty much had to waive a forward or no one.

Too many people live in the past. What "if" isn't an answer for anything. It was worth putting him on waivers and somebody claimed and he progressed. What if they didn't trade for The Kip? What if they took the other guy over Monohan? What if they never drafted Gaudreau? Here's a what if. What if Montreal didn't #### the bed the last month because they lost their goalie? When it doesn't pan out it, that's what it is.

You're right, and I like Engelland's play this season. But if they really liked Byron, they would have put someone else on waivers. I was actually surprised he lasted long enough for Montreal to get him.

I'm glad I still get to cheer for Byron. He's been terrific all year. Rather have six Byrons for the bottom two lines than the parade o' grinders we'd have if Therrien had his way.

Still, he's not the shrimp I'd give the first star. Gallagher was a beast yesterday. The team looks totally different with him around - if you look at the schedule, the team went down the tubes right when Gallagher got hurt.

Yeah, there were still options, just saying it wasnt as simple as GranteedEV made it seem.
Can't remember if I read it here or heard it on the radio but somebody said that Kulak (waiver exempt) could have been sent down after the last preseason game and recalled before the opener.

Should have never traded Marc Savard

Byron has a biography. It's pretty good.

Spoiler!

Would Byron have helped the PK? Yes. Would the PK have been dramatically better, I doubt it. Goaltending has been holding the PK back more than anything. It has been getting better lately and mainly cause Ramo has been coming up with saves.

Even if Byron was in the line up for the Flames we would still be a fringe playoff team. But it's nice to see him doing well in Montreal.

Nothing like a good playoff birth

I thought you needed to play 300 (or is it 400?) games to qualify for an NHL pension?
