but you would think the grease would be looking for some defence, almost anything is better than what they have now. oilers gonna oil I guess.

So Chiarelli will trade his best player for his off ice issues, but will then bring someone with issues in? Makes sense.

He'll fit right in up there. I hear instead of HOV lanes, they've got DUI lanes.

Seguin was not his best player then. Bergeron, Chara and Rask were way ahead of him.

Yeah I would agree with that. I've been thinking about that a lot lately, I have to believe that Chia would have traded for a defenseman by now if he could, he can't be this dumb.
I tend to think that things not being in a vacuum, that every GM knows how desperate the Oilers are for a defenseman and they're not listening to offers unless they include the names Hall or RNH or first round draft pick.
I'm assuming that the phone gets hung up if the names Eberle, Yak, Schultz, are mentioned.
As much as the Oilers have drafted first overall for so long, outside of Hall, RNH and McDavid, that top 6 is really flawed.
Even Hall outside of one good play in his own zone last night looked extremely disinterested last night and was pretty poor.
With a team with a pretty poor penalty kill and poor in your zone defensive play bringing in a guy like Kassian is like pouring gasoline onto a burning tire fire in the hopes that liquid puts out flames.
Guys like Kassian don't increase team toughness, for the most part it just increases the number of penalty kills you have to do.

So I guess that 3 years back when Kassian broke Gagner's jaw the Oilers way if getting him back was to eventually make him join them.
No better way to deter others from hurting your players than threatening to make them become Oilers. That's Eddie Shore style tactics.

If Kassain can get his act together this is a pretty solid trade for the Oilers as he's the type of forward they dearly need with size and grit. They really are a pretty soft team as the Flames aren't exactly going to be confused with a physical team but they manhandled the Oilers last night.

Last night they were melted butter, today they may be solid butter. It's a good move by them IMO tho. A goalie they aren't using, for a potential NHL player.

If he can reign in his demons, Kassian has the same attributes and upside as a guy like Ferland. Pretty much exactly the kind of young guy the Oil need in their system. They also used an asset that they didn't need.
I also think Scrivens is a better goalie than he played in Edmonton, so I believe he will resurrect his career somewhat (even if he is flipped to another team).
Good trade for both teams, IMO.

As long as they monitor Kassian to make sure he doesn't negatively influence any of the youngsters outside of the rink, there's no real risk. If he hasn't turned it around, tell him to stay home - costs the same as Scrivens did who wasn't doing anything for the Oilers. But if he does return to form, you got a potential 15-20 goal scorer with size to play on the third line and cause havoc in front of the net. Getting bullied by 185 pound Bennett was embarrassing for the Oilers, some one like Kassian (maybe not Kassian himself) is needed up north.
Besides, he's a first round pick and we all know you can only create a hockey team with first round picks.

I think this deal is OK as well. Scrivens wasn't part of any plan with the Oilers. Habs get a goalie that once showed promise in LA. They don't give up much to get him. Oilers get rid of Scrivens and his contract, and open up a spot for another prospect goalie. Kassian is a project. Put him in the minors. He knows he is on a short leash. He is subject to the leagues substance abuse policy, so if he screws up, those rules will take care of things. If he keeps things together, he might become a useful player or a tradeable asset.
This isn't a blockbuster, but a minor deal of garbage for garbage that might work out on either end. If the trade wasn't done, these players weren't doing anything for their current teams.

Zach Kassian is a 25 year old 30 point forward. Why is there so much "hope" with this guy? Why are people saying he's a top 6 guy? And why is it wrong to call him a bottom 6 plug? So far, he's been just that, and not even a good one

Given Kassian hasn't killed someone, I have absolutely no idea what sort of parallel you think you are drawing.
Anyway, two of the more overrated players in recent NHL history dealt for each other. This is a big ole pile of meh.

No shortage of raised 4x4`s in Edmonton for Kassian,so there's that.
Cam Talbot, take a good look at Scrivens, this is you is 11-14 months.
Once again, an Oiler trade is only able to be consummated because the acquired player has zero options or zero choice on going anywhere else.

Pretty low risk move for both teams. For the Oilers specifically, can't really much risk here, worth seeing if Kassian can turn it around with them.

Probably the first time in 25 years that the players coming and going are happy with an oiler trade.
Good luck to Scrivens piecing his battered career back together.
