I think you're misinterpreting what he meant so I'll use myself as a example. The movies that are interesting to me I'm going to go see in theaters, then there are the movies I don't really have any interest in other then I'm bored as all hell and they happen to be on netflix or a pirating site. If they never appeared on there I would never see them and wouldn't think twice about the movie again. So the amount of money lost by the production companies is exactly zero if I watch a pirated version.
Infact, pirating can generate additonal revenues. There have been instances, albeit only a couple, where I watched a illegal version of a movie and liked it enough I either went and caught it in theaters or purchased a copy for my personal collection. I want to emphasize that these are movies I never in my life would have went to see or purchased.
I'm not trying to justify pirating, I'm just explaining why pirating probably doesn't have much of an effect on the bottom line of a movie and while movie execs sit there and tell you how pirating is such a evil thing I don't think they spend too much time up at night worrying about it. After all, they are choosing to send out these DVD screeners knowing pretty much 100% they're going to end up on torrent sites the day they go out, but they'd rather have the Oscar consideration.
As for The Revenant and the Hateful Eight, I actually quite enjoyed the hateful eight, my biggest criticism as a restless person, is who the F can sit for 3+ hours in a theater for a movie like that. I long for the days of 90 minute movies when I was leaving the theatre wanting more not like these days when I want to bust out my phone to check the time to see how much longer until it's finally over.
