I knew that number crunching is still a big part of the accounting world and I know that as a new graduate I'd have to put the work in to move up, thats really with any career choice no one is going to start doing the more "fun" work. I'm fine with crunching the numbers I was more wondering what else a career in accounting would come with apart from the number crunching part.

I appreciate all the answers though.

There are lots of career progressions from accounting. I personally think the place to start is articling in a CA firm. I'm not convinced that getting your CPA through industry is a place to start if you want a greater variety of opportunities. The people I've come through the system with have become CFO's, VP Finances, CEO's, Investment Advisors, Corporate Finance professionals, Partners at CA firms (Audit, Tax, Consulting, Forensics, Business Valuations etc.), private business owners. Of course others are in more mainstream accounting jobs. It all depends upon how ambitious you are.
You have to work hard and it can overwhelm you if you do not manage time well and look after yourself.

Companies are still going to be looking for the specific route of the designation however you don't need to put that on your resume so a better chance for someone to sell themselves in person vs never getting into the door.
Sorry, I meant change for things like the finance majors who grabbed a CMA to go with their CFA and the confusion on how to determine who is allowed to do audit etc. But that's stuff that doesn't have to do with OP. My mistake for going off topic.
