So the Penguins opted for the man who marked the beginning of our Young Guns era ? Those small, buttersoft, unskilled and underfinanced Flames ?

warning: do not open the spoiler tags below if you want to stay in a good mood ...

I wish them all the best though.

That was the year I moved to Calgary and started cheering for the Flames. $20 tickets from Co-Op an hour before puck drop... Good times.

Hlushko is an analyst for the Leafs' radio broadcast now. Always wondered what happened to him.

Dave Gagner was great for the Flames.

I loved me some Hnat Domenichelli when I was younger. Remember seeing him at a Spengler Cup a few years back. He managed to carve out a decent career in Europe did he not?

Holy hell Iggy is old (hockey wise). Puts into perspective even further his accomplishments in GP and goals.

Some pretty sweet sounding names on that roster though: Tabaracci, Hoglund, German Titov, Hnat Domenichelli, and last but not least, Zarley Zalapski.

So it has been a full week.

Pens are 0-3 since and have been outscored 13-3.

Crosby has been nothing short of average, Kessell looks like his give a crap meter is where it has always been, and their defense is an unmitigated disaster. Fleury who has been great is out for an undetermined amount of time while he undergoes concussion protocol and joins Beau Bennett who is out at least a month.

Malkin has been pretty good as has Matta....but otherwise a terrible effort from the players.

They get the 'Canes in Pittsburgh tonight....lose this one and they are as much a disappointment as the league has seen in many years.

You know, just because a guy was not a good player in the NHL doesn't mean he can't be a good coach. In fact, he can be a good coach even if he played for an awful team.

After all, Dallas Eakins played for the Flames during the Young Guns era…

Um, never mind.

Hard to believe Sid is already 28, and Malkin is pushing 30.

(Already been just about 7 years since they won the Cup with a 22 year old Crosby, and a 23 year old Geno, Yikes)

They don't have much time to turn it around now in Pittsburgh, before those two are past their primes and unable to carry the load the way they used to.

With Rutherford as the GM, it's probably already too late.

If they don't get it figured out, wow. Two generational centers for the past ten + years and only one Cup win and just two trips to the Finals.

What a waste really. Should be able to build a dynasty with those two centers to build around.

The Pens never seemed to figure out how to get a nice mix of skill, skating, size and physicality on the backend. And the way Shero went about trying to compliment Malkin and Crosby was just silly, especially most of their deadline deals. They acquire Iginla and then the coach doesn't even play him in the right spots. They spend a 3rd for Stempniak who is a good player but wouldn't spring a 2nd+ for Cammalleri who is a much, much, much better scorer. Depres for Lovejoy last year was a real head scratcher. Trading for Kessel? Bit of a head scratcher.

Its almost EDM like incompetence of management, its just that they started with two franchise centres and a decent goalie and couldn't go anywhere from there.

I have no problem watching the Pens flounder. As MacT would put it, they are still paying for all the success in 92 & 93 hahaha.

The Pens are going to be bad for a long, long time. Might be time for Sid to look into jumping ship. Doubt he will, but if he wants to win another cup, it won't be in Pittsburgh anytime soon.

But if they traded Crosby, Malkin and Letang, they would get a huge pile of picks and prospects in return - especially if they were willing to take some crappy salary back as well.

They could make it the fastest rebuild in history.
