How many snake threads do we need?? (Although, I fully understand this thread was started first).

Before last night, we had 49 games left with 32 points in hand. Break that into 7 x 7 game segments and win each segment 4-3, and you get 88 points. Throw in a couple loser points and you've got your 90 points.

Record in the first segment - 1-0.

Only 2 points back of our pace from last year. We were of course well above a 90pt pace (97pts), but it was presumed 96 would be needed last year, which was very close to the truth (96 needed - perhaps 95 with a tie-break).

If you've caught their games they're getting strong goaltending from Nilsson, Nurse has bolstered their defense from the top down by knocking everybody else down the rung, the Hall-Draisaitl line is one of the best in the NHL right now, and they'll get McDavid back next month. Draisaitl will be a #1 Center in the NHL if he's not already as he's one hell of a skater with a complete skillset and high IQ.

Don't be surprised if both the Oilers and Flames are in a dog fight for 3rd until the end of the season and maybe even 2nd as Anaheim is no lock.

I'm actually hoping the Oilers are at least in the playoff race late into the season if only to protect the careers of the top 5 prospects in the upcoming draft. As long as the Oilers take a step from all-time worst NHL franchise to continual mediocrity like the Winnipeg Jets all will be good for Flames fans.

They're a little better now sure but you're overstating their improvement. They're a little bit like Flyers-west. A nice core of very talented forwards. An absolute trainwreck defense and inconsistent goaltending that can't hold up to being peppered for 40 shots every night. They're getting outchanced severely and making up for it with that shooting percentage and a hot stretch by their goalies.

I don't think their defense is a trainwreck when their top 3 guys (Klefbom/Nurse/Sekera) are playing. They've been without Klefbom for the last bunch of games which I firmly believe has cost them at least two points or more.

And I would trade our goaltending for theirs, even with how well Ramo has played Talbot has an innate ability to stand on his head and Nilsson plays a very steady style.

They're getting outchanced severely and making up for it with that shooting percentage and a hot stretch by their goalies.

The Flames did that for the entirety of the 2014-15 season....

The Flames did that for the entirety of the 2014-15 season....

They have no top pairing d men no matter how you try to slice it. Extremely difficult to make the playoffs with sub par D...look at Colorado. They only made it that one year on the back of a Vezina winning goalie.

I wouldn't trade Ramo for either of their goaltenders at this point. Ramo is better statistically in every category. Talbot was fine behind the Rangers defence, but not incredible. Nilsson hasn't played that much, so who knows what he might be. He looked fairly average for the Islanders a few years ago though.

That's some strange oilers love. Nurse is going to be a great defenseman one day I believe, but the oilers possession and shot numbers crater with him on the ice. Sekera is alright but prone to some big gaffs now and then. They miss Klefbom sure, but they weren't that good with him so I think you're pretty far off the mark here.

As for your earlier mention of missing an entire second line, they're missing McDavid. Yakupov is inconsequential without him, so let's call a spade a spade and admit they miss McDavid. And with everyone healthy, they had a pretty bad record. I'm not saying we're miles ahead as there is only 2 points between us, but they are 3 points away from being worst in the league. Again

The two losses right before the new year set us back a bit from pace. Nevertheless, the upcoming four game home stand can put us right back there.

4-0 would put us right on the line. Not an easy task, but this team still hopefully has a lot of confidence on home ice.
