Black Betty must have had some serious identity problems, not surprised. When they were Sociale the gangsters started showing up and ruined the crowd; owners changed and wanted to rebrand, not sure that location ever recovered from that. However, I'm just a former patron speculating.

Bistro 2210
Black Betty
Blowfish Sushi Lounge
Brava Bistro
Cafe Artegiano (both new locations in Britiannia & Mission)
Candela Lounge
Chicago Chophouse
Corbeaux Bakehouse (still around as a bakery that will supply to the Analog cafes in town)
downtownfood
El Dorado
Gallo Winebar
Grate and Barrel (though now looking for a new location)
*Hooters (both locations)
Il Sogno
*The Keg (beltline on 11th, yes a chain, but this location was well known)
Korq Wine Bar
The Loop
*Mission Diner (not so much a closure as a rebranding to Grate & Barrel)
Moxie's (on 17th, chain restaurant, but this location was well known)
PoBoys Diner (just opened and closed in same month)
Rush Ocean Prime
*Tilted Kilt (double closure in same location, 501 Bar opened and closed there in a few months as well)
The Unicorn
Definitely seeing that, I i think it will continue, but many of those restaurants listed had closed due to other issues or have since reopened as new places.

Bistro 2210 is now Suzzette, which is a great spot and always packed
Black Betty is now workshop i think
Candela is now Mission... something, same owners as Anejo
Brava's closed because, apparently, the owners were just getting bored, etc. and its now Native Tongues
Chicago Chophouse's new location was bad. + they had other businesses to focus on
Korq was terrible. Had nothing to do with the economy. Plus the location is cursed.
El dorado is now Derrick which looks decent
Also, i think the Keg is just moving to mission.

I agree, its never a good sign when Resto's close, even if another is opened in the same spot, but such is the industry. I think we will be seeing more close Downtown more than anywhere else. 17 and Mission restaurants will survive based on the residents and traffic flow. DT resto's rely on that business traffic and big marketing budgets.

I think the industry will contract quite a bit over the next few years. I think the boom afforded Calgary with some great places to eat. Really rivaling most other cities in Canada. Lots of places didn't work, some because the idea was flawed, or the food was mediocre. However, some were really good, even excellent.

I remember being a person who liked to eat at good restaurants starting back in 1997. Which is funny because I couldn't afford it working part time at Safeway and being a student. Back then there wasn't much past Teatro, La Chaumiere, La Caillie, The Conservatory, McQueen's Upstairs. Great spots, and really fun for a 19 year old to be sitting a a sea of middle aged people enjoying his lava cake.

Anyways, I hope my favorites survive this downturn. I was in one just last week and was the only one there for a late lunch. I managed to chat with the exec chef a bit, and he said he is really feeling it. This wasn't a super high end place either. So it got me a bit worried. Corbeaux Bakehouse isn't going to be terribly missed, but there are some gems out there that I truly wonder if they make it.

Brava is now Blanco - owned by the Anejo guys. Native Tongues is in a different location right by The Beltliner
Just clarifying a couple things.

I'm wondering when Hy's will close.
Same with Rodney's Oyster House.

Two places which seem to have had massive renovations done and very limited number of customers the few times Ive been there, or walked by.

Hy's is usually busy at lunch, just a massive space.

If Rodney's goes under, its their own model. It would be a perfect after work place but no cocktail/drink selection whatsoever.

Rodneys suffers from being beside two of the most popular bars in the city.

But It's not really a bar.

I've stopped in a few times after work, or in between get-togethers at Craft for some food. Food is decent, and works great as a casual place to have oysters etc.

But the issue comes from "Ill have an old fashioned" "im sorry we dont have the stuff for that. or "any cocktails?" nope.

I think if they got a solid bar and drink selection, they could compete with Craft/National, food wise.

Restaurant is a tough tough business. You rent 2000 sq ft but only 1000 sq ft is generating revenues (the other 50% is the kitchen) for only a few hours a day.

I don't think Calgarians in general are food connoisseurs that are willing to pay a lot for quality food. And in this downturn, without the corporate dinners, it'll be tough for a lot of the mid to up scale restaurants to operate.

I believe Il Sogno actually chose to close due to getting nowhere in new lease negotiations with the landlord.

The Unicorn closed due to that space becoming part of that new department store from Quebec, Simons I think.
