Well, turns out my Red Wing Iron Rangers are hell on ice/snow. Feels like curling shoe sliders

Wasn't planning buying new boots this winter, but looks like I need a pair for Ice/Snow. Anyone have any experience with Mark's (Denver Hayes/Farwest) offerings? Specifically if they'll last more then a year or two? Or are they a 1 & done scenario like the crap I bought from Aldo a couple years back?

Buncha fancy boys with yer store bought boots.
The thing ya do when you need something warm for your feet is find and trap a couple of raccoons. Make sure ya get ones about the same size as yer feet. If ya need better traction, substitute porcupines for the raccoons.

For the bus/train crowd, how are you using boots while having dress pants? Covering them up with some winter pants or packing them and changing at work?

Take em to a cobbler and they will put some rubber traction on them.

I keep a pair of dress shoes at the office.

I am a bit surprised at the number of references to boots that I would consider more for style vs performance here.

Regardless, if you want a warm durable boot that is good on ice, I would recommend these ones from Marks.... (check the reviews)

http://www.marks.com/shop/en/marks/f...ack-boot-29429

I have had a pair for over 3 years and they have stood up really well. They handle cold weather amazingly. Night and day compared to the thin leather ones I am seeing on this thread.

Hopefully they have those in store when I head in later today grey, seems like a good price and they look heavy duty.

Im looking for both "performance" and "style" pairs this year as two old pairs went out to pasture last spring

They are pretty awesome IMO. Although they are bulkier than some of the "style" boots out there, they are quick and easy to put on/off and once you have worn them a few times they break in really nice. They are my go-to dog walking boots too Ken. Great deal on them right now too which is a bonus.

I have a pair of these Eccos. They have a full gore-tex lining, so my feet have never gotten wet. They have held up really well, much better than cheaper boots I have bought in the past. My only complaint is the sole is quite hard, so while it won't get worn down easily it doesn't have the best grip on ice.

I have been well served by my 20 year old white Sorels ... very warm, good traction, reasonably waterproof and remind me of how cool I would have been in high school if I would have had them then rather than the cheap Kamik knock-offs my parents bought me at Saan.

I wear Blundstones to/from work. They have decent grip and warmth so far. I walk home everyday for 25-30 minutes and I am more worried about my jacket warmth and face protection lately.

I keep a couple pairs of dress shoes under my desk to change into.

Over the top. I find my legs don't get cold if my feet and body are taken care of.

Don't cry over spilled milk
No fear!

I'll have to check for those at the mall burninator, love the Ecco shoes I own and those are sweet.

Where do you wear those though? I couldn't see myself wearing those for anything other than shoveling a driveway.

Granted I live downtown so I'm never really have to walk too deep of snow.

I think you answered your own question there.

I use them for:

-Walking pathways with the dog and kids.
-Walking in off leash and park areas with the dog/kids.
-Driving highways on inclement weather days in the winter.
-Any other outside activities in the winter (walking to the outdoor rink, etc)

And even shovelling the driveway!

If your life revolves around apartments and downtown life then yeah they might be overkill, though the original poster asked for winter boot suggestions for usage more than just the walk from the c-train to the office.

I've had some good luck with my Keen Growlers for winter. Good enough for shivering and walking but look like regular keen hiking boots (not too bulky that you can't drive in them). I've had them for 4 winters now and they have been great, might try some Merrells now to get a good read on them.
