Please no mega threads. They're so annoying.

If you just bumped the terrorist thread, I'd have no idea that this was going on until I come across it somewhere else. I like getting my news from CP.

Pretty heartless to pick and choose one person in strife over another person in strife because of where they are from.
Yes, of course. But Paris I think struck a cord among North Americans more than the other attacks because of Paris being in Europe. The fact is that America and Canada were founded by Europeans, so there is simply a more natural connection to Europe and therefore more sympathy/shock. That's my theory anyway.

I don't think it's "wrong" people felt so outraged about Paris more so than over other places that were attacked. Canada especially has a deep and obvious connection with France. It's a natural human reaction I would say.

However, if you brush it off as "oh, who cares so more Africans or Asians were murdered for no reason" well then my friend you are what many on this board like to call a racist, bigot, xenophobe. Probably the most used words on this site other than "Flames" since Nov 13th.

It's inherent tribal biases that are essentially a product of evolution and are hard to dispel. People are inherently predisposed to feel more compassion for those they perceive as more like themselves. These traits were evolutionarily useful in a non-global society where protecting your own tribe and being distrustful of outsiders kept one alive. We're no longer in that situation, but evolution is a slower process than human technological advancement, and our frontal lobes just have not caught up to us.

I would suggest that this is tendency is morally wrong, in the sense that we should not act according to meaningless differences, but it's something that one needs to recognize in order to make an effort to get past it.

The reason why an ongoing thread can work for American shootings for instance, is because we're at the point (and passed it years ago) where those events just do not rate anymore. The only time we'll need a separate thread is for a Sandy Hoke type event. I really hope we don't get to the point where we're desensitized to terrorist attacks.

I think this thread is a pretty clear indication that we're past that point.

Which IMO is good. No good has ever come of the general population worrying about terrorism. It just makes it harder for the governments to deal with it in a measured way, but it does make it easier for ruthless politicians to abuse that fear.
