It's like the Flames are paying for last season as not a lot of good things happening in the organization right now.

Just speculating, but I suspect the reason he hasn't gone under the knife yet is there is a chance they can manage the pain and play through it. Maybe delay the surgery so the recovery time coincides with the offseason as much as possible.

With the way the season is going, why wouldn't you? He has some of the worst stats in the NHL. Who is going to claim him?

Again, I'm pretty sure this is exactly the path Thatcher Demko took and it seems to have worked out.
The Demko comparison is interesting and encouraging in re: Gillies's recovery, as that surgery apparently makes you some sort of impossible to score on cyborg.

If a team claims Ortio, they have to have him on their NHL roster correct? Not sure how many teams would claim him if that's the case.

Correct.
There is about a 0% chance anyone wants to be anchored to having to keep him on their roster given what he's shown this season.

Yeah there's probably truth to that in that the team has looked at the calendar and decided it was best to do this now.

My guess is a team claiming him would probably have a #1 goalie and their # 2 would probably be a journeyman with not much upside. They could break Ortio in slowly without him costing too much in the standings.
This was probably our plan except no one stepped up as the #1 and we've been so bad that we can't afford to give Ortio any starts. Maybe once the team falls completely out of the playoff run, Ortio will get his starts.

If Gillies was this good with a nagging hip, just imagine how good he'll be when healthy.

Might be another Bennett scenario. Where even though he was impressive, fully healed he had an even higher gear.
Gillies has alternated between lights out and OK. The injury might help explain why that is.
My biggest concern is how BT is going to keep this group of kids together. The crap contracts will have to stop soon. In 4-5 years this team is going to have a (good) problem.

And the crap contracts that stretch out over 4-5 years are...

I think he means that our core will be up for their 2nd big contracts in around that time. Four big ones. Johnny, Monahan, Brodie, Dougie. We will want to keep them, and they will be paid.

Yes, and also implied there are crap contracts that may keep us from doing that at that time. Dougie is signed for 6 years as it is. The only one that MIGHT hurt us is Gio, and even that's not that bad.

I kind of hope he does get surgery. Short term loss - long term gain.

Prediction: Ortio makes it through waivers and surgery is a 100% go; Ortio gets claimed by someone and it's 50/50.

I think he will have the surgery regardless, the question is probably more if it will be now or in the off-season. If he has it now he could be done for the season, if he has it after the season he may miss games here and there but will get ice-time to develop now and would rehab through the summer. I would think the latter is more favorable.

I hope they do what's best for Gillies, regardless of what happens with Ortio.

this is a hip condition that many goaltenders play with for years, waiting another 5-6 months is likely not going to make it any worse.
