Don't get me wrong, he's up there for sure, but in my personal opinion he's not the best. Agree to disagree.

Ovechkin would get in tomorrow.
List of players who have won three Hart trophies:
Howie Morenz
Eddie Shore
Gordie Howe
Bobby Orr
Bobby Clarke
Wayne Gretzky
Mario Lemieux
Alex Ovechkin

That would be a amazing considering he lost about 60 goals due to lockouts and played in the heart of the dead puck era.

For sure. Would love to see him put up another 40 goal season before he retires... Preferably with the flames. If he could do 30+ goals this season, 40 goals the next season, and 30 the season after that... He would finish with around 700 goals!! I know that's a really tall order for any player to do let alone someone who is 38 years old and has a ton of heavy miles on his career... But if anyone can find a way to do it... It's iggy.

If Crosby retired now I think he would and should be a first ballot guy.
Ovechkin likely gets in as well considering the media love affair with him.

Uh, I think there's more of a media love affair with Crosby than Ovi.
Do you not remember the constant "updates" when Crosby was injured?

When the best player in the world is injured there are going to be updates. Not sure why that is an issue or a surprise.

I could see him playing another 2-3 years after this contract and still being a 20 goal guy. I think his 40 goal days are over, perhaps even his 30 goal days.
I could see this:
15/16, 38 years old - 25 goals
16/17, 39 years old - 25 goals
17/18, 40 years old - 20 goals
18/19, 41 years old - 20 goals
That would leave him at 675, not impossible by any stretch.

I don't think Toews is as much of a lock as you (and many people) think yet. If he retired right now, is he in? Possible for sure, his cups and gold medals are impressive, but the Hall of Fame is more about individual stats than anything and that's where he's lacking. Only 515 points. Conn Smythe and a Selke are good, but he's missing the major trophies like a Hart/Art Ross/Rocket Richard/Ted Lindsay.
I think he's clearly on track to be a Hall of Famer, but if he never played another game, I don't think he's there yet.

I was being facetious.
A guy like Kopitar has an eerily similar resume, and gets a fraction of the media attention that Toews gets.
I think if Kopitar was the Canadian and Toews was Slovenian, then Kopitar would have a Selke, a Conn Smythe, and a Mark Messier Leadership Award(lol), and Toews would have none.

Hard to tell sometimes. Many people seem to genuinely believe Toews is the best player in the world, when you could easily make a case for him being the 3rd best on his own team.

Kopitar's citizenship totally affected what team hes on and his career accomplishments.

The NHL has had it out for Slovenians since day 1 bro. Why do you think he's to only Slovenian in the NHL?

Ovechkin has debatably been the better player (than Crosby) since 2009, and is most certainly the better player today. Come the end of their respective careers I think Ovechkin will indeed be regarded as a better player than Crosby (in part due to injuries).
We're talking a player who has 3 Hart Trophies and 483 goals and he only turned 30 two months ago. Like Iginla he also missed as many as 130 games due to the lockout. He may still challenge Gretzky's goal record, but would likely have reached 894 goals had he played then (he would around 550 goals already).
All that he really needs now is a Cup on his resume. I don't place as much importance on Olympics as others do, because of the one-off format, and Canada always will have a stacked team. It's not like Sid was phenomenal at the Olympics himself.

Dastardly Slovenians! Untrustworthy!

I basically agree with most of this. Although I'm not ready to declare who is the best yet. Let's wait until their careers are near an end.
Speaking of Olympics & Iggy, I firmly believe Iggy was the better player than Crosby, as were Doughty and Toews. I remember Nash being pretty solid too.
Also speaking of Olympics, 2002 > 2010 for me. That crop of Canadian players was just OMG. Sakic, Jarome, Lemieux were just unbelievable.

Hart Trophies is a pretty weak way to judge especially when Crosby definitely should have won in 2013.
Injuries is basically the only way to say that Ovechkin is better than Crosby.
Crosby is a better than average defensive player versus Ovechkin is a below average defensive player. Crosby is good on face-offs, Ovechkin obviously doesn't take them. Crosby came into the league saw what he needed to do to make his team better and did it.
Crosby has a career 1.34 PPG playing with studs like Kunitz and Dupuis on his line for the majority of his career. Ovechkin has 1.17 PPG playing with Backstrom for the majority of his career. Crosby has never had seasons as poor as Ovechkin's 2011-12 or 2013-14.

Why should Crosby have won the Hart in 2013? He missed 25% of the season (lockout shortened, I know, still 1/4 of the season).
If that year went to anyone other than Ovechkin, it should have been Tavares.
