You don't become an NHL player unless you got put up some kind of points in junior. Just because other picks made around him didn't turn out doesn't mean it was a bad idea to pick this guy.

As long as you can squint and see a path to the NHL I can see drafting him but this is a guy who was picked exclusively because he was big. This guy's only hope is that enforcers make a comeback and he can carve out that role.

Actually that's not being fair. writing off a project defenceman that early is similar to all the fans that wrote off Jankoswki in his first couple years.

Personally I don't write off anyone until the Flames write them off and that includes Jankowski. My complaint is that IMO he was too big a gamble for us at as our first round pick. I don't know Kanzig's odds of making the Flames have improved any since he was drafted but I didn't think much of Jooris until last season either.

The Keegan pick is yet another reason why I'm glad the former regime is no longer around. Weisbrod had those tendencies to show how he was smarter than everyone else and feaster went along for the ride. If we selected this player because we had picked F with our earlier picks, that's a bloody shame. I like the new mantra where our scouts are out there to get prospects that will play, not going off the board to show others how they know best. Kanzig gets picked in a later round, no problem. But don't pick projects in the 3rd round.
