If that move that Bennett pulled on Deschene behind the Av's net on Tues night is an indication of things to come, Flames fans have much to look forward to. With Conner McDavid now on the injury list for the next three months the hockey world may begin to keep a closer eye on Bennett.
No matter how ya look at it. What a luxury it will be to have Bennett and Monahan playing centre on the top two lines when they are 27 and 25 years old.

The Flames were extremely fortunate during the early part of the rebuild to get 2 bona fide stud centers with their top 10 picks. Monahan was the no brainer at 6 and Bennett the same at 4. I was surprised that both players were available when we picked.
They compliment each other so well. Monahan is the big body, cerebral, 2 way centre that plays a strong honest game. Bennett is a fiesty, speedy, dynamic player with an edge.
Both guys have incredible leadership qualities and we are lucky to have both of them

Expect more analysis on Connor's surgeon than on Bennett.
Is there any other sport where they do this weird proclamation of living arrangements?
I'd actually specify this further and say that it seems to be just the Flames that do this. Haven't seen it in any other sports and not even in hockey with other teams.

I think the media makes a bigger deal about it than it really should be. It's just a requirement of the CBA.
For a player who isn't an established NHLer, the team has to pay for him to stay in a hotel until he has been on the roster for a certain period of time/number of games. Once that time has passed (or any time prior to that), the team has to tell the player to find a place, which essentially means, "we're not paying for your hotel any more".
Also, the other sports aren't really set up the same with the Major Pro, Minor Pro, and Major Amateur structure that hockey has. If you're in the NBA or NFL, you can't be sent back to college if you're not doing well in the pros like a junior-eligible hockey player can be sent back to the CHL.

That was my understanding as well.

The World Ends when you're dead. Until then, you've got more punishment in store. - Flames Fans
If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
Actually if you compare the first 15 or so games of either players career.. Monahan got more offensive zone starts. Until recently Bennett was playing a defensive role for us.
Ozone and Dzone starts are a totally useless stat. Way worse that SAT% or uSAT% and about as useful as /-.
Slightly more than 60% of a player's shifts begin on-the-fly or in the neutral zone, the zone-start stat is measuring less than half of how a player is deployed. The largest zone-start disparities in the NHL right now are around + or - 50%, meaning the split in these players actual shifts is about 27% one zone - 60% neutral/on-the-fly - 13% other zone.
The vast majority of players fall between + or - 20% so their actual shift starts are like 18% - 60% - 22%.
So when someone brings up zone-starts to discuss a player's usage and points to the fact that they're like +20% Ozone starts and oh-my-gosh aren't they being sheltered, they're talking about a difference of 4% of their total shifts.
Now let's plug in some actual numbers. Sean Monahan had 25 shifts against Colorado. His ZSO% in all situations according to War-on-Ice is 19.3% this year. Woah, sheltered much? But wait...
15 of his 25 shifts against Colorado (at least) would have been neutral-zone or on-the-fly starts, leaving 10 starts. You can't actually get to that 20% difference without splitting the starts into decimals. So, what that +20 zone-starts means in actual fact is that he's starting 4.5 shifts in the D-zone and 5.5 in the O-zone, per game, on average. A whopping actual difference of one.
Zone-Starts, a useless stat.

Still shaking my head that a few people were suggesting sending him back to junior a week or two ago.
Sure he got off to a bit of a slow start - so did Gaudreau, and a large percentage of all rookies, ever.
But that's why a little bit of patience is a good thing. Had he been sent down, that would have been it for the season.
Now it's quickly becoming apparent that he is going to be one of our top forwards this year.
I was one of those that thought he could use a demotion, but that was before I found out he couldn't go to the AHL, definitely too good for the OHL. He's definitely been one of our best players and few bright spots early on in the season.
Having him, Monahan Jankowski down the middle will be nice moving forward.
Imagine if a team could have had McDavid and Monahan as their 1/2, that'd be pretty awesome......
People are really tough on Monahan right now. He's had a rough start to the season but still has 8 points in 14 games. He scored 31 goals last year as a 19/20 year old. He'll be fine. He's a #1C and wears an "A".
Sam Bennett is also a #1C who should buy a nice place in Calgary that he can retire in.
The Flames need 1 more star winger and their top 2 lines will be set for a very long time.
