Dubnyk only cost a third last year. As long as the cost is similar to that, just grab someone. The current guys are all terrible. I'd give Scrivens a try at this point.

I can't believe that after all the smack talk, some people are actually considering bringing in Scrivens....

It would be really dumb for the Jets to trade Pavelec. Hutchinson isn't yet established.

Yes it would be dumb to trade a career 908 goaltender.

2 other organizations that are worth keeping an eye on are nyi and tb
Nyi has halak greiss jf berube and a couple of kids in the ahl that they are high on.
Tb has bishop the Russian backup and a Baltic g that is an up and comer along with Kevin poulin.
Pickard and Murray are intriguing but would they deal with us and what is their depth past those guys?
Options exist for sure.

If the Wings are sold on Mrazek, I'd be fine with the Flames taking Howard off their hands. He could mind the net here for a few years until Gillies or McDonald are ready to take over.
Three more years @ $5.3 million.
Send them Ramo or Hiller and one of our glut of bottom pairing Dmen.

Few other g that may be available
Tokarski from Montreal
Jeremy smith from Boston
Justin Peters from Washington
We all know tokarskis story with the habs. Jeremy smith was going to backup rask until they signed the monster. Good ahl stats
Peters had played in Carolina. But got pushed out in Washington but has excellent stats in the ahl.

What about Mike Smith? He's having a bounce back year in Phoenix, and maybe they'd be looking to offload his salary. Other options could be Howard, Mason, one of Niemi/Lehtonen, and perhaps Elliot for starters that I could see teams moving at some point.

Tokarski isn't running the greatest start in St.Johns this year. 2-2-2 in his first 6 starts and a sub .900 pct. 3.45 gaa? Thats not that good.
Fucale is doing better and it appears they're rotating between the two pretty evenly.

Of course it can be fixed by coaching. Goalies who were league average last year don't just forget how to play and become the worst in the league overnight. They need to be better - including positionally, which coaches can help with. They also need the team in front of them to play smarter, simpler hockey. Which, again, the coaches can help fix.
It's easy to get all Oilersfanish and blame the goalies, but the truth is, we're giving up a crazy number of high quality chances, something we did not do last year. Fix that, and the goaltending problem sorts itself out.
Or, you can overreact. That's easier, but not better.

We've gone from 1 spectrum to the other in less than 4 weeks. Now we're the desperate ones looking for a goaltender.

I'm not big into rushing, and I'm not suggesting it would end up saving anything, just a random musing. But would the Flames look to call up Gillies before making a trade for a goalie? I mean you have this guy, has had a good start in the minors, has long been considered a top goaltending prospect, is massive and athletic, wouldn't you look to see what he has before bringing in yet another goaltender? He certainly wouldn't be the first early-twenties goaltender.

I think Treliving only does that if all three of Ramo, Hiller and Ortio start to crap the bed again, and he can't find another one in the trade market. Ideally you want Gillies getting as many starts and minutes as possible, which he will be getting in the AHL. However if he gets called up then he'll be riding the pine some nights so I'd rather him get a good full year in the pros before trying some starts in the NHL. And until the defensive coverage finally cleans up they'd rather not play him in that situation at all.
Year after next I think he will be the clear starter for the NHL. Until then let's let him ripen.

All evidence shows the goalies aren't as bad as they've shown this year. They are slumping and will return to their normal selves at some point. They aren't great goalies (Ramo and Hiller at least, who knows about Ortio) but they are average or slightly below average guys. They arent scrubs.
