There was something I read on another (weather nerd) forum last night that the flight crew yesterday, in the midst of flying, something in the storm caused them to plummet something like 600 meters in under a minute. That would be terrifying.
Luckily, it appears that where the storm came ashore was a relatively unpopulated area. The biggest problem with this won't actually be the storm surge or the wind speeds, regardless of how impressive they once were. The rain is the big story here, mudslides and flooding are going to cause major issues.
It's also really remarkable how quickly this thing became a monster hurricane and then just as quickly dissipated to just remnants. The mountains just destroyed its organization.
