If eating bacon is wrong; I don't want to be right.

What’s the secret to an extra-long life? For one centenarian, it just might be bacon.
A 105-year-old Texas woman, who became a widow at age 38 and worked as everything from a cotton picker to a hay baler while raising 7 kids on her own, says bacon is the secret to her longevity, the Huffington Post reports.
“I love bacon. I eat it everyday,” Pearl Cantrell told NBC affiliate KRBC when asked her secret to living so long. “I don’t feel as old as I am. That’s all I can say,” Cantrell added.

I'm gonna trust the 105 year old. Science talkin' guys be damned.

well that's it for me, I guess.

Wonder if the Flames win another Cup before I go out - from this or from starvation now that I can't eat anything.

The report is actually out now. Brief conclusions:

Processed meat (which would include bacon) is listed as Group 1 - confirmed human carcinogen. They estimate that eating 50 g processed meat each day would increase your risk of colorectal cancer by 18%. That's a fair amount of processed meat and the risk to any individual is still relatively low, but on a global population basis this results in about 34,000 deaths/year (compared to about 1 million for tobacco).

Red meat at this time is considered to have limited evidence of carcinogenicity in humans, though there's a lot of underlying science suggesting it's very plausible (i.e. there are known mechanisms by which red meat is expected to cause cancer if a lot is eaten).

That's only 2 slices of bacon a day...

World's oldest woman eats bacon daily.

I'd honestly be curious to see the research methods. A lot of the time these studies don't account for overall lifestyle. People who eat poorly and don't exercise are more likely to get cancer. They're also more likely to chow down on bacon.

Why bacon though? I was thinking that processed was meaning that the meat was laden with unnatural chemicals and whatnot. Bacon is jut cured pork belly. Is even curing considered harmful? It sounded pretty benign.

I guess studies could consider the longevity of people who practice certain religions that abstain from red meat or pork products to see if there is a relationship.

There are people who eat poorly (judging by girth alone) from Muslim and Jewish backgrounds who would be counterpoints to the North American bacon and Bbq ribs lovers. So then do unhealthy eaters from those groups have a higher risk to cancer than unhealthy eaters of red meat/processed meats/pork eaters. I think that would be a fair comparison.

But then there's probably a lot of Jewish people who eat pastrami or corned beef which is also processed. Probably difficult to find a control group.

I hate the word "processed" in these terms. Cutting the meat is a process, adding spices is a process, cooking is a process, etc. What crazy process is causing cancer? It's either the meat, or a specific process/processes.

The sheer number of articles by respected science pages on social media sharing this story with no skeptical view on the issue makes me sad.

Its sad that it took an article in the Guardian of all places to put the facts of the story in their place.

http://www.theguardian.com/science/s...e_b-gdnscience

Quote:
Comparing meat to tobacco, as most news organisations who’ve chosen to report this have done, makes it seem like a bacon sandwich might be just as harmful as a cigarette. This is absolutely not the case.

The headlines are referring to the news that the World Health Organisation has classified cured and processed meats (bacon, salami, sausages, ham) as group 1 carcinogens, because there is a causal link between consuming these meats and bowel cancer. This group also includes tobacco, alcohol, arsenic and asbestos, all known to cause certain cancers.

But just because all these things cause cancer, doesn’t mean they’re all as risky as each other. A substance can increase your risk of cancer a small amount, or, like tobacco, a huge amount. Comparing them like for like is just really confusing to anyone trying to work out how to lead a healthy life.

I think they should start releasing what DOESN'T cause cancer, it'd probably be a shorter list.

If you're reading this on a computer screen, it'll likely give you cancer.
