How do people stay up to date on all this new music? I just left my 20s but but 98% of this list is completely foreign, not to mention foreign sounding to me. Trying to listen to this stuff on youtube is unpleasureable and it feels like a job listening to 100 bands trying to find things I enjoy which I don't, especially through my computer.
I used to pride myself on being a "music guy" (played in a band, owns 400+ albums, etc.) but I'm completely hopeless when trying to find new music to buy/listen to.
Out of this list I think I'm looking forward to Haim and M83. I never "got" the point of Crystal Castles even though their cover of Platinum Blonde's Not in Love became a big hit. They sound terrible in everything without Robert Smith. I've heard of Viet Cong as being a local band that needs to change their name, Tegan & Sara from some remixes, MGMT from "Kids" (I bought this album and was disappointed at the entire thing), and that's it aside from some really old groups on there like Metallica (don't care), Smashing Pumpkins (I hated the 90s), and Gwen Stefani (I've got to get Love.Angel.Music.Baby on vinyl).
I will spend about $50 a week on records and I never know what to buy.

Try listening to internet radio - TuneIn is a great app for that (when you find music you like, it will suggest similar stations).
Stations that play the types of artists in that list:
thecurrent.org
cjsw.com (all shows are now archived and playlisted - try a genre you like)
kexp.org
kcrw.com
3wk.com
cbc3
electriqueradio.com

Wait really? That whole debut album is amazing, and all the songs are fairly similar to Kids. How come you didn't like it?
I have to disagree, I think "Kids", "Time to pretend" and "Electric Feel" really stood out on the album as being contemporary synth-pop, where the rest of the album was more of a 60's psychedelic rock revival that they seem to prefer to play.

Yeah, that's what I was hearing too. Very bland neo-psychedelic rock in the boring way. Nothing really stood out and I've only been able to listen through twice. I'll give it another spin when I go home today. That's one thing about vinyl, it's like when you only had one game for your Nintendo growing up and you would play it to death and learn to enjoy it even if it sucks.
Hmm yeah I can see that I suppose. This is probably my favourite song on the album, and yeah it definitely does have a more neo-psychedelic sound than the singles do.

The part you're not understanding about it is that bands like that are meant for drug users. Not that I'm advocating it or anything but bands like MGMT are clearly drug fueled and inspired (their name strongly resembles mdmt, a drug used for enhanced listening). The bland psychedelic songs are supposed to be easy on the next level mind if you will, logically it makes sense. Splice together a few more upbeat pop songs with chil out relaxing melodies inbetween.
If you don't have the stuff to get you there it'll probably come off as very confusing or tough to get through. Like going to 3d Imax without glasses.

Belly is very happy to announce that we will be reuniting to play some shows this coming summer in the US and the UK. Dates will be announced as they are confirmed, but right now we can tell you with relative confidence that the UK shows will fall in the middle of July, and US shows will be scattered throughout August and possibly into September.
We’ve also got a handful of brand new Belly songs in various stages of writing and recording, that we’ll be releasing one by one over the next few months. First previews will be on the website.
The album I started this thread with has really grown on me as I listen more and more. If you've never checked out Shearwater I recommend giving them a try. Jonathan Meiburg is pretty incredible.
