Kessy's antics last night almost caused a line brawl. And that was after his first fight which was immediately after he hit Johnson with a questionable hot

Wish it was Grats instead. Not sure why they didn't re-sign him if they needed someone in that role.

Didnt 'Grats' say he was done with fighting and wanted to focus on his game. Orr will be a nice fit in the minors. As its been mentioned -protect the kids.

Anaheim gave McGrattan an NHL contract. Treliving probably wasn't willing to do the same.
Also, with Anaheim's farm team being in San Diego (90 miles between arenas), McGrattan probably got a place about halfway between to two cities, so he can be with his wife and new baby every night whether he's in the NHL or AHL.

Maybe McGrattan didn't want to live in Stockton with his baby? Can't say I blame him.

I think techniques wise there are lesser fighters who are better. Orr is mostly right handed and trade punches. It happens that Hejaz a well feared right. I wonder if we are better off with a younger tough guy like Setitos or Mclaren who don't have as many hits to the head. I like the move to bring in a heavy though cuz guys like Kanzig and Smith are inexperienced and might get tuned by veterans.

More importantly is how good of an example he is to the kids. We know Grats is great as a big brother.

Ugh...what a total waste of a roster spot that takes time away from developing our kids. Face punchers who don't have hockey skill no longer have a role in the NHL. They're definitely not needed in the AHL to protect your non-NHL players.
IF you're going down the road of needing an enforcer in the minors, at least get someone younger who may surprise everyone and eventually be called up to our 4th line one day.

I agree with your point that the role of the enforcer is dying out and it seems like a wasted spot in this day and age.
However, I don't think it will take as much time away from the kids as you think.
First off is Orr will likely get around less than 5 minutes of ice time per night. This should lead to an increase in ice time for the other 11 dressed forwards.
Secondly Orr will be 4th line most nights. 4th line in the AHL is probably not a good spot to develop prospects, the ECHL is a better spot. If a prospect is consistently on the 4th line in the AHL, he won't likely have a big future in the NHL.

The bolded is 100% false. The AHL is much more violent than the NHL as all those face punchers you referenced that are no longer in the NHL, are often playing in the AHL.

Totally agree...although that's why I'd much rather have a younger "enforcer" in that role with hopefully some hockey skill, in the unlikely chance he develops into something. Bringing in a guy like Orr at the tail end of his career who can only play 5 mins a night doesn't make much sense. Really, I'm splitting hairs here as I realize the chances of a young enforcer playing 5-10 mins per night making it in the bigs is quite small (but still higher than the 0% chance of Orr).

I'm sure if there was a younger "enforcer" with potential to develop out there, he would be signed by a team already.

I'd argue this is why a guy like Orr fits the bill for this. You kind of answered your own question. ~ 5min a night, its nothing. And I think you know this. He's just there to protect the others on the team, if/when needed, so that they can develop - not him.
I know you are not specifically saying this, but development is more than putting all young guys down there and watching them develop. There is a lot of context that surrounds that. And if you you need someone solely to play the role of policeman for a couple of minutes a night, especially given the other policeman around, in the minors, I think a random guy like Orr fits the bill. Not everything is "young or bust".
And extremely unlikely, but if you need someone like this for a 1-off in the bigs, a guy like Orr fits the bill.
