It's not a bad plan when you think about it. You rest your top 4 d-men who will be heavily relied upon once the regular season begins. You get to watch the guys you think are already worthy of a regular season recall play against what would be close to a regular starting lineup for the opposition. Now, when you need someone from the farm you know how they stack up against an NHL regular lineup, not a bunch of 'tweeners and junior prospects with a handful of coasting veterans sprinkled in the lineup.
These last 2 games will be tune up games for everyone, and the veterans will likely be playing near 100% effort (or should be anyway). That's a better test for some of these guys since we already know how they fare against AHL players and pre-season lineups. My hope is that 1 or 2 of them look really impressive (my money is on Kulak) and they make management second guess the signing of someone like Ryan Wilson (not that I have anything against him). Some of these d-men need to start forcing their way into the lineup.

Do not meddle in the affairs of Wizards, for they are subtle and quick to juggle rosters.

This will be a great way to see who is deserving of those last few spots. (And also a great reason why one shouldn't worry about the W/L record in the preseason).

Insurance?? Since when do you need insurance for pre-season games. Either leave them or ship them. What does it do to a player's confidence? Think the trade deal soon. Maybe a Wideman or Smid or both. Maybe marks the release of Wilson from PTO. Wait and see I guess..

I don't think it does anything to a player's confidence

If they're insurance, then it's insurance in case a trade goes down. Gotta think some guys are being shopped. Engelland and Smid come to mind. Hope Wideman isn't moved, unless the return is insane.

You play them to ensure Gio/Hamilton/Russell/Wideman don't get injured in a meaningless preseason game. Gio and Russell have already blocked shots.

If they want to rest their top-4 for the last two games they need to call guys up. Simple as that. Nothing more. Wideman or Smid will not be traded.

This all adds up to a tougher game for Ortio in Winnipeg...facing a full Jets lineup with potentially all rookie D in front of him.

Didn't see anyone mention trading any of these guys.... one scenario when you have too many bodies at a position is to flip them for other assets you need, could be picks, maybe RW depth or maybe they could be used as chips when moving out another contract (hiller, raymond, etc). We have a glut of forwards and dman, we also have an extra goalie. A few mentions of trading vet d-man in smid or engelland, but it's also quite possible we move some of these prospects and this is actually a show case to do so.
To me it feels like they haven't made up their mind on D, this gives the prospects all another opportunity to take the available spot and drive the competition. Whoever showcases best in Winnipeg will be in Calgary on opening day.

If Ortio has another huge game he might be the starter on day 1

I highly doubt it, my guess is Ramo gets the start
no point in risking another top d-men...season starts in a week lets just get the pre season over with

I understand not wanting to risk anyone from our top 4. What I don't understand though, is why they were sent down 2 days ago only to be recalled again, as if this situation couldn't have been foreseen.
I don't want to be one of those "must be a trade coming" people.... But this does tingle the old trade balls.

It's to see if they have another gear. The players will look at it as their last chance to cement themselves into a roster spot. Hope is one of the strongest motivators.

Too many bodies all over the place, trades will need to happen regardless.
