If you just want a room where you will spend most of your time outside, you may want to consider the Pod hotels, Pod 39 and Pod 51. Small rooms and the cheaper ones have a shared bathroom. But if you are OK with that they are well reviewed hotels. This will be the best price you will find in Midtown without going to a full hostel.

Honestly, they aren't that much smaller than many other hotel rooms in NYC advertised as regular rooms. I stayed in a tiny room while I was there. Was totally fine. Cleanliness is the far bigger worry in a place like NYC.
