Really though Gruber had one stand out year, and outside of that, offensively I think was pretty meh. I guess that 3 year stretch of 88 to 90 he was a consistent 4-5 WAR guy, but Donaldson has pretty much eclipsed Gruber's best offensive season in 2/3rds of the season outside of the RBI number which is an over rated stat.
Never hit for a great average, at best an average OBP guy, and the one outlier year for home runs. Defensively he was pretty good when healthy, but the Phaneuf comparison is bang on. Seemed to have lot's of talent, but outside of the one year really couldn't bring it together. I thought he was terribly over rated myself, never liked him!
So yeah one year but Josh Donaldon is my winner. Tony Batista actually put up a 2 plus years of productive offensive seasons, but that was in the steroid era, so I don't know how much you can really count his numbers, and defensively wasn't particularly good.
