I like the signing. Super low risk with the potential to be very high reward.
Also a bit surprised he took a million in the NHL over multiple millions in the KHL. Maybe that say's something.

Semin already got paid. Not sure how determined he will be this year. However, I still think it's a good signing for a team given the term/hit.

Weird signing, why stay in North America for $1million and do the whole grind of an NHL season? Probably takes home less than half of that.
Weird player. Super skilled & super lazy.

Considering Carolina will be paying him lots of money for a long time I don't think he's too worried about cash. Maybe he just likes living in NA?

Well that's what I mean. He's got the money. Why put yourself through the grind of a season away from your homeland for basically peanuts?
He clearly doesn't play hockey because he "loves" it. Maybe the Mob is after him in Russia?

Like I suggested, maybe he likes the lifestyle of NA? I really have no idea. Definitely an enigma.

Barely more than we paid Setoguchi for a similar role.

U.S. Dollar vs Rubles?
The KHL ain't the flight risk it used to be. 1.1 for Semin is a good deal (particularily if it's contract year Semin).

It was reported a while ago that he wanted to stay in the NHL and had no interest in going back to Russia. He or his agent had said he'd welcome a 1 year "prove me" contract. He seemed eager to prove himself again and that's why I thought he'd be a good fit for the Flames. He has the talent and has a fire under him to prove it, Harley is also an amazing coach and the team has a good leadership core. I don't think he would have rubbed off on anyone, if anything he could have taught some of the younger guys about skill.
He seems motivated to stay in the NHL and is trying to prove himself. At 1 mil for a year, I don't know how you can say this is a bad signing. If things don't work out then who cares, but if they do and he regains his form look out.

The only worry here is that Semin will play well...for one year. Then get signed to a longer deal and go right back to playing like, well, Semin.
Think he'd be the perfect mentor for Yakupov though. Too bad the Oilers didn't pick him up...

Semin has lived most of his adult life in the US.
Also, Putinland isn't exactly the greatest place to live in right now.

He may be motivated to 'prove' himself again this year. But the reason he has to is that he has shown over and over again that he is beyond lazy.
In the NHL, you have to show up every night. He has repeatedly demonstrated that he can't.
He might manage to be motivated enough to put up a decent season this year, but it's nothing more than a ruse.
And it takes a roster spot away from someone that actually is committed.
That's not how you build a winning culture.

Would rather have Jooris - and the others he's fighting for jobs with - continue to develop and grow.

I'd rather have both and make training camp an even tougher mountain to climb to make the team. Semin could be a big time player for MTL on a line with Galchenyuk if they can re-sign him.

I'd rather sign Semin. He's much more proven at the NHL level and that doesn't preclude Jooris from stealing a spot if he really shows he belongs in training camp and at the start of the season in the AHL. With Semin's cheap contract, it's not a worry if you end up benching him or sending him to the minors because prospects are earning a spot in the lineup.
