I think the whole culture is fascinating and I would love to browse the user base to see if I know anybody.

The use of fake profiles on Ashley Madison for the purpose of drumming up business has long been established.

Can you imagine if you were pissed at some people and started signing them up to this stuff with their info?

With any online service, the number of accounts is always much larger than the number of active users.
According to the main page of the Calgarypuck forums, this site has 16,874 members, but only 3,542 active members. Just over 1,000 (as of 10:45am MT) logged in users have visited CP today. Most likely, a small fraction of those 1,000 have actually posted something today (many have probably never posted anything, ever).
I assume Ashley Madison is a paid service, so that's going to significantly drop the number of active users even further. On top of that, you have to wonder how many of the actual active users would provide their real contact information. You have to assume most people who don't want to get caught by their spouse will use a pre-paid Visa (or something similar) to pay for the service, and fake contact information to go along with it.

 Posted the 6 millionth post!

A former employee did an AMA on Reddit yesterday . . . Half the accounts are bots. So halve that number of Calgary cheaters and that's probably a bit more accurate.

I contemplated making a fake account out of strict curiosity to "see if there was anyone I know". Then I thought of my wife discovering that account and having difficulty explaining it so I didn't. Thank god

Also a lot of the bots are probably female, dramatically increasing the number of single males looking to possible exploit the site. I wouldn't be surprised to see that the actual number of people looking to commit adultery is actually quite small.

The slimeballs that run the site do have one good point though - the hack is still illegal, even if it is fun to argue about karma.
This hack and the threat to release personal and financial information should be treated just as seriously as the Target hack was.

I know there is a good portion of younger women on there looking for older married men for a sugar daddy relationship.

I just don't understand what the impetus for this is. Are there super self-righteous moralistic hackers out there who object in principle to the very concept of infidelity so strongly they'd be willing to commit criminal offenses?
It just seems more likely that it's your stereotypical maladjusted geeks in a basement somewhere trying to make themselves feel powerful.

I mean, it is basically a standard thing that the easiest way to separate a poor, lonely, young man from his money is to promise him sexual and emotional intimacy with a beautiful woman.

Using the site is apparently free.
It's removing your account that costs money.

Making fake profiles is a sleazy business tactic, and so is paying to remove your profile.... but I don't have anything against the operations of the business itself.
It severs a market that has a demand, whether people like it or not. In that regard, it's really just operating like any other business as a for-profit enterprise, and I have no issues with that. If you want to use their services though, have at 'er. I wouldn't, but if that's the thing that floats your boat, and it's not illegal, why not?

Just reading the link by peter12, there appear to be site functions that cost money? If people are being led to expend that money under false pretences deliberately and dishonestly created by the site's staff, that seems like fraud under $5k to me...

This.
Can't fault them for filling a need. Especially if they think marriage is stupid.

I'd be surprised if it was 10% of the legit accounts that actually followed through on the intent of the site.
