The last part of that ad suggests you could totally hook up with a hockey player there.

Yeah, but it would probably still work today.

Crap stereo? What makes you say that? That Technics (Panasonic) system makes me drool! That's $4500 in today's money!!! $33 jerseys are equivalent to $85 today.
Those Japanese amps from the late 70s, early 80s are built like tanks and use components that will last 50 years.

Wow that is so cool. Just wasted my afternoon reading those articles. The Skalbania interview was fantastic.
Not a fan of the flowery writing style used in that arena article however.

He later went bankrupt and then went to to jail in the late 90s for theft.

It's funny to read the Skalbania interview knowing what a flash-in-the-pan guy he was and that his whole empire was already on the verge of collapse.
From reading various Hotchkiss and Seaman biographies, I believe he was already in the process of selling his stake in the Flames back to the local investors by the time this interview was conducted, and basically had no involvement in running the team by that point.

Wow, just read Duhatschek's article and I can't believe they didn't sell beer at the games. That is insane!

Love the Duhatschek article (didn't even realize the guy was already writing in frickin' '81).
"They're a frustrating team to watch," adds James Muretich, a Montreal native and long-time Canadiens fan.
That's awesome. Young sports reporter Duhatschek gets his young music reporter buddy Muretich to comment as a random fan.

^Ha. Great catch. I think they may have even been room-mates at one point. Certainly they shared a love of music.

Yeah....different times for sure.
Liquor stores were run strictly by the government (ALCB)....closed at 11 PM and never open Sundays or any stat holidays. You wanted beer after 11 you could only buy it at "off sales" at select bars around town, and at extraneous prices.
At one time right around then, they had just changed the law that allowed you to walk around the bar with a drink, otherwise you had to have a server move your beer/cocktail in order to change tables or whatever.
As for the OP....fanfreakingtastic stuff and seeing it I remember reading it back then. Very exciting times and will never forget being at game 1 that season when I was 5 feet from Willi Plett threatening to carve out Dale Hunter's eye.

Same article quotes former Sun Page Six columnist Jim Davies as a "season ticket holder."
Duhatschek, Muretich and Davies were all at the Sun back then. Eventually they all moved over to the Herald.

Was Steve Simmons there right from the beginning too? I remember reading his stuff back then, but not quite sure if that was right early or later on like 83-84...

You also had underage teens standing outside the entrances on weekends with money in their hands asking you to buy a case of beer for them. IIRC they gave you a couple of bottles from their case for doing it.
