Pff... come on, dude. You're telling people to buy Samuelsohn. If you're trying to be snobby, you're doing it wrong. What kind of plebe wears that utilitarian box-cut junk?

Otherwise, whatever, who cares. We live in a very casual society right now. I personally think peoples' sloppiness is disrespectful, and lazy, but what can you do?
For a good budget suit, I always recommend SuitSupply. You can order online or go to their store in Toronto. You are looking at $500-600 for a starter suit, which is all you need for most jobs, anyway.

I don't know about the travelling asian tailor suits but I've had them made directly in Asia and have several bespoke wool and cashmere suits and the quality is great.
I've actually started to wear my grandpa's suits because that slim 60's fashion is actually pretty fashionable these days and all his stuff was genuine bespoke, made-in-england stuff from back in the day.
That said, I barely ever wear as suit as there is rarely an occasion to do so in today's casual culture. I'm on the same floor as the CEO and even he rarely ever wears one. I tried a tie once but got sick of the: "what's the matter? Job interview today?" jokes. I'd estimate I wear a suit under 10 times a year.
Disposable fashion is another alternative choice (even if a bit unethical). I went to a wedding in BC once and forgot my entire suit. I ended up buying shoes, slacks, shirt, tie, and jacket at H&M for about $250 and the cut was ultra-modern and looked great.
On a side note, these threads about threads are always entertaining and I imagine a bunch of backyard BBQ dudes making fun of Niles Crane.

Since when is Samuelsohn box-cut junk? It isn't Canali, but it isn't utilitarian. Maybe Coppley.
Anyway, their Gable cut fits me very well.

I went to Thailand and got a $300 suit. It fits very well and looks fantastic as it's custom and made-to-measure, but it's very clear that the full quality isn't there with regards to the fabric and the stitching.
However, I would say that it is far superior to any $300 suit I could find in Calgary, and I'd say the equivalent value is around $500-600.
The problem with these trunk show things is that you're now paying $500-600 for $300 (or less) quality.
A $500 suit at these things is still gonna look better than an off the rack suit that you can find, but you're not far away from getting something pretty decent at Nordstrom (like a $550 suit with $100 of alterations).

I'm just messing with you. I do think the word "utilitarian" applies, though; the point is Samuelsohn is absolutely not snobby. It's competently made, not-offending-anyone, long-term daily use stuff if you work in an office. It's not like you're suggesting people go to Holts and blow ten grand on a Brioni.

I know. That was my point. I am not talking Canali, Brioni, or Tom Ford. I am talking like a very well-made for the price, working suit or sport coat. I am not Mr. Flash walking down the street in one. I am basically trying to look like my grandfather.

I have three suits only - one of them doesn't fit me anymore (got it shortly after high school), and the other two I now have to suck my stomach in to get into. Like, a lot.
As for $400 shoes, well, I find as long as you shine up some beauties bought from Payless Shoe Source, nobody really notices (or cares)... or at the very least, doesn't ask questions. That's good enough for me!

Thanks for the post. A made-to-measure suit has actually been on my list for some time now. With a wedding coming up in September I might just pull the trigger.
Do you know how long the sale is on for?

In my experience the $400 shoe ends up being cheaper in the long run. It's only $50 to resole a shoe which is cheaper than another disposal pair.
The ethical argument is a neat one too. There was a day that the average person owned a few outfits and they were made by the tailor down the street. Now we have huge closets full of junk from overseas. The tailor and cobbler, middle class skilled jobs, have almost been completely eliminated. They've been replaced with minimum wage door greeters.
And on that note, take a trip to Sears next time you want some underwear. Prodige and Protocol are not only affordable but made in Canada.

peter12, need some fashion advice. I need a sport coat so I can stop just wearing my suit jacket as if its one. What is the right fabric/style for the first one in the closet?
Also, should I have a base type of slacks for the closet to go with it? I'm pretty sure the only thing in there I'd wear it with right now is jeans.

Navy blazer, grey flannel slacks in different shades, blue or white shirts. Can dress for 90% occasions.

I willingly pay more for clothes if they're not made in a sweat shop. You get what you pay for and there's no reason to shame someone because they like to feel and look good at work.
O'Connors is expensive, but has the best customer service and quality in town. I wear my clothes pretty hard and they mend/tailor everything that I've gotten there for free, even years later.

Thanks for posting.
The state of dress for you average person these days is pretty sad. Homeless bums in the 1930s dressed better than your average North American man today:

^^^ Oh yeah totally.
You really notice it when you travel. I felt like a total hobo in Europe cause I was rocking a hoody, ballcap, jeans and Nike Airs which is pretty standard attire here.
Also lots of the Asian tourists who disembark off the tour buses are dressed real nice. Most of the men are in sport coats and dress pants. I'd never wear that when on vacation.
