The explanation at the time was the players we traded for would boster our chances of winning the Cup. It did work in our favour but I have wondered how that trade would been looked upon had we not won the Cup in 89.

Bad.

What makes it worse is we traded down to get Kidd and Jersey got Marty Broduer later in the first round. Ohhh how Broduer would have looked great in a Flames uniform

Iginla trade is the one for me, thought we should have gotten more (and probably should have made trade sooner).

Savard is a stinker. Had he not been traded and concussed by Cooke he might still be playing. Even without those goggles on, he was clearly a big talent and we just gave him away. Brutal.

Horrible trade.
But the trading of Iginla reignited my passion for the Flames because the team finally played with passion again

Timely topic.
On March 4, 2009, the Flames traded Prust, Lombardi, and a conditional 1st round pick to Phoenix for Olli Jokinen and a third round pick. Disappointing in that Olli Jokinen started off looking like the savior for the Flames -- the first line centre that Iginla never had all those years. Two weeks later, he goes ice cold and the rest is history.
To add insult to injury, according to Wikipedia the conditional 1st was for 2009 or 2010 (Flames choice). They elected to keep the 2009 1st rounder, and picked up some whiny brat named Tom Erixon at #23 (traded down from #20). The following year, Calgary missed the playoffs and Phoenix ended up with the 13th overall pick. They picked Brandon Gormley, but could have selected some Russian named Vladamir Tarasenko who went three spots later (yeah, the same guy that just signed a contract for $7.5M x 8 years -- today).

The low Canadian dollar that forced the Flames to trade or not be able to sign some of their best players in the 90's.

Yeah, a relatively minor trade in the grand scheme of exchanges where we repeatedly took it in the pooper, but it definitely was exceptionally "WTF", as there was nothing redeemable about it. With the rest you could at least say "Leeman scored 50" or "Housley was the American Paul Coffey". That was a brutal run basically from the end of Fletcher to the end of Feaster (with some exceptions). Ironically enough, the 2 trades which we hit the jackpot on (Iginla and Kiprusoff) were accidental where the other team would not give up the player we wanted (Harvey and Toskala)...

While this was true, no one was forcing them to make terrible trades for lesser players. Over and over and over again.
1992-2003 was an awful, terrible, horrendous time to be a fan of this team.

Calgary trading Robert Svehla and Magnus Svensson really bothered me back in the day. I think it was because Svehla went on to become a really useful defenseman for Florida at a time when we were entering the nightmare Young Guns era, and he wasn't exactly expensive to keep if I recall correctly. I know he didn't play a game with Calgary, but we got absolutely nothing that turned into value for him. He was certainly closer to ready than Dmitri Vlasnekov and Ryan Ready, that's for sure.

Lol, remember when everyone was convinced it was the first domino to fall and it was just the beginning of a bigger plan? Turns out, Darryl just went insane with desperation. Good times.

Dion for me. Iginla was just sad because it was Iggy, but the return wasn't as bad at the time as Phaneuf.
I'm only 21 so a lot of these old trades never impacted me personally but yikes there are some bad ones out there...

Titov (with Hlusko) for Wreggett (and Roche).
I loved German Titov and was underwhelmed when it was determined Wreggett (career backup) was to become our new starting goaltender.
Probably not a good representation of the thread's title, but certainly a disappointing one.

The Phaneuf trade was disappointing in the sense that it was so unexpected and due diligence wasn't done to get the best value for him at the time. With that said, there hasn't been a single moment outside of that season that I have missed having him. He was destined to be run out of town, it just happened sooner than we all expected.
