I actually think that former GM Mike Gillis didn't get enough credit for some of the off ice things he did to
TRY and get to the top.
Sleeping coach is one of the areas the Canucks kind of lead the league and I also believe the Calgary Flames also hired a "sleeping consultant" to work with the team on a part time basis.
Playing out west with the modified travel schedules, getting the most amount of true rest allows for peak performance.
One of the avenues I can see the NHL going to in the future is significantly increasing budgets for things like sleep coaches, strength and conditioning coaches and all around health/wellness/rebab professionals. There is no salary cap or budget restrictions for this and it can make sure that your guys are always as close to 100% as possible.
If you compare the NFL to the NHL the amount of rehab, massage, and health professionals working on NFL guys its crazy. Obviously the NFL has much higher revenue so its not a fully even comparison. When you look at the physicality of the NHL and the fact they play multiple games a week with back to back and 3 in 4 etc. Makes you wonder if some of these players could benefit from full time massage therapists traveling with the team, portable hot and cold tubs etc.
Just an observation on my end.
