Solid deal. A bit risky paying for potential but could be a steal in a few years.

Brutal contract, at least for the next couple of years.

If I were a Columbus fan, I'd be a bit concerned if Saad's point totals were inflated by his linemates.

52 points probably isn't worth 6 million to begin with, and that could realistically be lowered to 40-45 with less surrounding talent. I guess they are hoping the Saad will continue to develop. His points per game hasn't really improved since his first year though....

Chicago also got a pretty good return for him. Hard to criticize the move by them. Good capitalization on a second round pick.

That's pretty rough. I'm a big Saad fan, but that's a lot of years and a high AAV. Should benefit from playing with Johanssen though, and I bet that's what Columbus is banking on.

It's weird. Everyone saying Kessels contract was brutal then ROR and Saad get these contracts. I'd rather have Kessel. At 15% retained he's a bargain.

Hoping these contracts are not any indication of contracts going forward though

Interesting...

Saad at 6 x $6M
Kessel at 7 x $6.8
O'Reilly at 7 x $7

would depend on team need, but it would be between O'Reilly and Keesell for me

yep, you look at the most sensible July 1st since before the first lockout. Then GMs go full stupid on the trade/resign market.

I really like Saad but what a dumb contract. The guy is worth nowhere near 6mil.

This is why I argued with people on here when they said Phil Kessel should get 6 million tops.

Of course. Kessel is far more talented.

I want nothing to do with ROR and that contract. He will never be a #1 centre.

Top tier players have been worth 10M a year in their prime for years.

Crosby averages over 10.5M a year until he's 35.

Parise averages over 10M a year until he's 35.

Weber averages 11M a year until he's 35.

Suter averages 10M a year until he's 35.

Ovechkin, going forward, makes 10M a year now until he's 35. He signed his contract in 2008 with a cap-hit of 9.5M+.

Lundqvist makes over 10M a year until he's 35.

These contracts just have either lower paying, if not completely retirement, years added on beyond their 35th birthday.

Malkin actually took a paycut signing for 9.5M a year until he's 35.

Kane and Toews, because of the new CBA, are the first players who's cap-hit actually mirrors the salary of top players in their prime.

It's not that surprising that the second tier players are asking for 6-8M a year, there's still an obvious demand for them.

Yup. people don't seem to realize that the biggest reason that top players salaries have been comparatively low up to this point is because of backdiving contracts.

The newer contracts will always look high compared to the old ones for this reason.

This is the most absurd overpaid signing I've ever seen. I would love to see if Saad even gets close to becoming a 60 point scorer.

If he plays with Johansen, absolutely.

Foligno also will make 5.5 for the next 6 years.
Plus that Clarkson contract.
Those 3 wingers will combine for almost 17 million against the cap per year. Yikes!
