There is no LTIR in summer.

But correct. Both players count toward minimum, and the teams can exceed cap by the amount of these contracts for however long during the season that they are on LTIR.

Even on LTIR, your salary counts against the cap. It just gives the ability to exceed the cap. And the only reason the Coyotes acquired Pronger's contract was to count it against the cap, so the rules magic the league did to try and help the Flyers last year won't be utilized this time around.

I disagree. This is an absolutely terrible trade for the Panthers. Hayes is a burgeoning power forward that will at worst be a solid 2nd line winger.

Trading him for Reilly Smith, who while being a decent winger, is more of a dime-a-dozen type player in the NHL. Players like Hayes are harder to find these days.

Add in Savard's contract to a cash strapped team and it makes nearly zero sense.

Savard's contract is the benefit - he has a $4M cap hit for $575 cash...Florida gets to the floor paying less than the floor amount.

I'm surprised that the Panthers did not get an addition pick for doing boston a favour

doesnt Florida save money?

They get to reach the cap floor easier and the insurance company picks up the bill. Or am I wrong?

Panthers are above the cap floor even if you take Savard's cap hit out and still have to re-sign Huberdeau. They took on his cap hit just to facilitate the trade.

Agree. I think FLA got the better player, but BOS got the player I want more for the Flames. Solid trade for both sides.
